A friend owns a 99 Vw cabrio. auto trans. It has been slipping a little, but now it is pretty much dead, won't move hardly at all. And it will only go into a few gears. Sounds like it needs to be replaced. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

they don't give that info away free, you will need to buy a factory manual, not Haynes or Chilton, they are junk.

Unless you have allot of past experience doing trans work this is not a do it yourself job, your friend would be better off to buy a rebuilt trans and just use his old one for a core. also a caution buy from someone like NAPA, not Kragen or Autozone, they have around a 25% fail rate on there rebuilts, they are cheaper for a reason.

I have a 99 Cabrio and there is no transmission dip stick. According to the manual, you cannot add transmission fluid to the transmission yourself, you have to take it to a dealer.

2002 vw Cabrio\ transmission doesn't shift out of second.

Is it a auto tranny? Might be your fluid levels check those. Also could be your detent cable. If manual tranny and has a hydro clutch check those fluids. Just some stuff to check. I would hate to say change your transmission.

I?m not familiar whit that car on particular But like 99% of cars you need to remove the entire dash board in order to replace the heater core Is not a easy job and there is lots of things you may live unplug and you may have more troubles down the road but if you insist of doing it your self you find what you looking for at www.alldatadiy.com good luck

Dipstick

If it is an automatic, which I assume it is since you're looking for a dipstick, it needs a special fixture to add fluid(Dealer or foreign auto mechanic) or check level. If it's a manual trans, there is a check/fill plug on the end of the transmission behind the driver's side front tire, probably takes a 17mm internal hex head socket. Use 75W/90 gear oil, filling the trans until oil just starts to overflow through the hole.

2001 vw cabrio automatic transmission

I'm dealing with the same car. I just had the transmission completely overhauled. Very$$$. The mechanic told me that it's common for cabrio's to develop this problem between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, mine happened around 95,000 miles. Knowing what I know now, I would have sold it.
