Question about 1999 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

My trans is sitting on the frame and a bolt busted through the housing and it's leaking. It was slipping really bad, but I added some trans fluid and it stopped slipping. But the leak is still there. Will the hole get bigger if I keep driving, will the trans go out? I need help on what to do.

If the bolt busted through the transmission case then you will need to replace the transmission because the problem will not go away. You mat be able to buy yourself some time by patching the hole with some JB Weld which is available at your auto parts store, but it will not last forever. Make sure that it is superclean before you apply the patch. Wipe it clean and wash it well with window cleaner that has ammonia in it and then put your patch on. Hope this helps.

Leak visible on transmission cooler

unless leak has gotten bad enough to lower the fluid level dramatically fixing it will not improve slippage, slipping is worn clutch surfaces or low engagement pressure, (low pressure could result from really low fluid) If you fill it to full and it still slips fixing the cooler will not help, but fixing the cooler leak is a necessary item to do anyway, keeps oil out of our ground water and off the roads making them slippery for motorcyclists.

My 2001 Dodge Stratus is leaking red fluid and smoking really bad. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with my car and around how much it will cost to get fixed?

depends as red is usually transmission fluid and that is not usually a cheap fix sorry. If you are lucky it is just a pan seal then the repair is 1hr or less. but if it is a housing seal leak then you could be talking up to 7 hours of labour as trans has to come out. if the fluid is getting on anything hot then you will get a burning smell. if the leak is higher on the housing it could be where the dipstick tube meets the trans housing

Tranny slips when warm, runs fine cold, why?

That's a sign of hardened seals. They're stiff and leak when cold and soften and seal better as they warm up When did you change fluid last? You can try a fluid flush and a bottle of Lubeguard supplement. But really, start saving for a transmission rebuild.

Trans-axle fluid cooling ,all fluid gone

If the trans. fluid gets down , even a quart, it usually starts to slip or not shift right. Check the fluid with the engine running and warmed up on level ground (in park). If it's low start adding fluid about 1/2 a quart at a time and keep checking it. Watch for leaks while you're filling it. If no leaks are found take it for a test drive and check the fluid again.

I have the 1997 sunfire that slips sometimes going up a hill. i installed new filter and fluid. aamco checked and said problem was it just needed another quart which they added and said trans was o.k. but...

Having owned a Trans Shop, you DO HAVE a leak ,or you wouldn't have to add fluid. Also, any problems that last a few months, not even years, needed to be checked out immediately. My guess is the leaking fluid over the years, caused the slipping and you neglected it. Now you can have it rebuilt for $1600.00. I sure wouldn't go back to those shops, you went to. AAMCO really let me down ,here. I owned a different franchise. Any slipping in a trans is not okey. You know that and so do the pros. They lost your business acting stupid, rather than helping you. I will go on to say ,that changing the fluid on a trans that slips, will only make it worse, and they kow that.

How do I change trans fluid on a 2008 escape hybrid

Only 2 ways that I know of....
Easiest: Suction the fluid via the dip stick tube using a drill pump (about 4 bucks at Harbor Freight or on line).
Less Easy: Remove all but one of the transmission pan bolts. With a large container under the pan, loosen the last bolt until you can pry the pan loose.... let the fluid run into the container. When it is empty, retighten that last bolt and then reinsert the removed bolts. The pan gasket should not leak when new fluid is poured into the dip stick tube (check it after about a quart is added... and snug the bolts either side of any leak).

You need to remove the trans and clean up the bell housing and trans housing. If you got this tranny from a junkyard chances are its been sitting around and has some surface corrosion on it that needs to be cleaned off. If you do this you should be good to go. Good luck.
