Do you have compression test rusults? What year is your mustang? Backfire in exhaust can only happen with unburned fuel, as you can imagine.

I will need more specific information, year, engine, and exactly what the unit has for emission controls...

It was running great and started backfiring through the intake. Just had a valve job with new valves, valve guides, springs and a new rocker arm assembly. New point, rotor, distributor cap, and wires.


recheck the valve clearance when the engine is hot if it is hydraulic operated then thee will be an auto adjustment but it should be around .010 " when stationary and hot

Backfiring is caused by either the firing order being incorrect or the engine timing is incorrect. generally backfiring through the carburetor is caused by incorrect firing order. confirm the distributor is inserted properly and double check firing order beginning with cylinder number 1.

I have a 1997 chevy 5.7 turns over good but will not crank up it back fires and sounds like it is out of time or cross wired but have timed all marks with distributor all wires are correct it gets fuel ...


There could be many reasons for it not starting and the backfiring. First, when did it start? Did you do some work on it? Were you driving at a high RPM? Did the engine make any unusual noise? Was it raining or did you drive through water?
First if you have rerouted any spark plug wires, make sure that they are in the right place and firing order. Number 1 cylinder is on drivers side. #2 is front on pass side. Make sure that the dist cap is dry and does not have any carbon tracks.
Pull all of the sparks plugs out and do a compression check on all 8 cylinders. If all are ok, check to see if #1 cylinder @ TDC corresponds with the timing mark on the balancer
Pull the valve covers off and check if any push rods are bent or if a rocker is damaged. A bent valve will cause a backfire through the intake..

Mark the spark plug wires for the cylinder number using a short piece of masking tape on each wire. Remove all the spark plugs using the spark plug wrench. The engine will be easier to turn by hand with the spark plugs removed and it's a good time to replace them if required. Remove the valve cover from over the number one cylinder. On a V-block engine this is normally the valve cover on the driver's side. On in-line engines the number one cylinder is the one closest to the front of the car. Check your vehicle's specifications to be sure which cylinder is number one.

Rotate the engine clockwise and observe the valves on the number one cylinder. When both valves are in the up position, insert a screwdriver into the number one cylinder through the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine very slowly back and forth until the screwdriver is at the maximum height. This indicates the number one cylinder is at Top Dead Center or "TDC" on the compression stroke.

Locate the number one spark plug wire on distributor cap and make a tic-mark of this position with a marker pen on the distributor housing. Remove the distributor cap and observe the position of the rotor.

Loosen the distributor hold down bolt and turn distributor until the rotor is lined up with the mark you made in Step 3. Your timing is now set to zero degrees of mechanical timing.

Replace the valve cover using a new gasket. Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires using the marks from Step 1. You may want to mark the harmonic balancer with a zero point referenced to a fixed point on the engine. A fixed point could be a bolt head or accessory bracket that does not move when the engine is running. Later on this mark can be used as an indicator for stroboscopic timing.

Connect a vacuum gauge to a manifold vacuum source. Most engines will have a port at the base of the carburetor or throttle body where a gauge can be connected. Start the engine and observe the vacuum gauge reading.

Turn the distributor until the maximum vacuum gauge reading is noted. Back off one inch of vacuum from the maximum reading. Tighten the distributor hold down bolt. Normal readings average from 14 to 21 inches of vacuum depending on the condition of the engine.

Test drive the vehicle and listen for pinging noises. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 if excessive pinging is heard, or if there is a significant loss of power. The timing is correct when the vehicle operates at maximum power without the engine hard starting, backfiring, or pinging on acceleration.

Not firing on number 4 cylinder


Hi,you probably have a compression or injector issue.If it will reach swap the injector wire(2 pin clip)to the next cylinder and see if it starts to miss or even swap the whole injector with one of the front ones to see if the miss follows the injector.If no4 continues to miss grab a compession guage and do a test.It should have a minimum of 140psi at cranking speed.A burnt valve is often the culprit,the clue is popping at the exhaust at idle is an exhaust valve,puffing or chuffing in the intake is an intake valve.This is a head off job,and you should do a full valve service guides etc while off.Also on re assembly check all vacuum pipes and fittings as leaks kill valves.Also if it has just started doing this it may be a vacuum leak near no4.Sometimes the brake booster or hose,it needs to be fixed soon as valves are burnt quickly

What would make my 1999 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a 4.3L Vortec engine suddenly start backfiring?


I know there are a lot of solutions here but I would concentrate on a couple of known issues for the 99 4.3l engine. Remove the distributor cap and rotor, check the reluctor wheel under the rotor and make sure it is not loose on the distributor shaft. The other issue is a worn distributor gear, you will notice a lot of freeplay when you try rotating the distributor rotor back and forth.
Last but not least, spray the inside of the distributor cap, the rotor and the inside of the distributor, this will remove and prevent moisture build up causing the backfire issue you are experiencing...

    Nissan navara 1986 2.4L petrol timing problem


    For timing, on 1981 and later 4 cyl engines (from the Haynes manual):
    1. Turn camshaft so both valves for #1 cylinder are closed, and turn the crankshaft so #1 piston is at top dead center (woodruff key should be pointing up).
    2. Engage the camshaft sprocket (with stamped numbers facing out) into the timing chain, and install the chain around the crankshaft sprocket. The bright links on the chain should be aligned with the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (on the right side as you look at it) and with the number "2" stamped into the camshaft sprocket, which should also be on the right side as you look at it.
    3. Install the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft, aligning the camshaft dowel pin with the number "2" hole near the center of the sprocket.

    For the firing order and wiring routing for the 8 plug 4 cylinder engine: (Plugs on the intake manifold side are coded "I", and on the exhaust manifold side are coded "E")

    Wire to 1I should be connected to tower on the distributor facing directly to the front of the vehicle. Going counterclockwise from there, the order is (1I), 2E, 3I, 1E, 4I, 3E, 2I, and 4E.
