I have the same exact cluster problem, When you turn the key on the fuel gauge pegs all the way and the low fuel light stays on, The oil pressure gauge pegs, and the speedometer and tach are completely inop. I thought it was the cluster but when i changed the cluster it made no difference.
This has to be common problem for these. But what is a possible solution?
I cannot see anything obvious
There is a ground to the cluster to the body that is not contacted. It has most likely disconnected from the cluster some where. The cluster can not make a connection threw,it has positive dc voltage, but not negative,it would have to be in the plug to the cluster.Finding the ground on the back of the cluster will be a procedure of visual happening .Look for the circuit on the back that looks like tracks running every where.Look for the track that all the components have in common. It will be the one circuit(track)that is broken in the circuit(track)or the plug in.There will be two of them. The circuit you are looking for will be ground(check with test light)With the test light grounded, touch the circuit you think might be the ground .The test light will light up,but kind of dim,and look at the gauges, and they will be working,if so,ground that circuit to the body somewhere.
