Does my 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L speedometer have to work in order for my cruise control to work. is there a way that i can bypass it to work

1st question, yes the spedometer has to work for the cruise to work or it has to at least get a signal from the speed sensor, if the problem is just the speedometer head then the cruise will still work, as a matter of fact that is how we test the system if when one of these come in the shop with an in-op speedometer we take them out and try the cruse if the cruse workes then we know the problem is just the speedometer head, if the cruse does not worn then it is a problem with the speed sensor or the control circuits for the speed sensor.

2nd question there is no way to bypass the the system to mke the cruise work yo dont have a speed sensor signal so the cruise has nothing to use a refrance in a way it thinks the car is not moving.

good luck, try replace the speed sensor in the transmission it might fix both problems.

The speedometer in my 1995 grand marquis has stopped working. The cruise control however does work. All other instruments and instrument lights work. The speedo was working and slowly went to 0. All fuses...

This is electronic and is either the sending unit from the trans mission, unlikely since the cruise works, or a burned circuit in the instrument cluster for the Speedometer and Odometer. Double check your connections to make sure they haven't come apart somehow but you may want to have a shop look at this and isolate the problem.

My spedometer odometer and cruise control all quit at once

In these newfangled speedo guage drives, they've taken out the cable drive and replaced it with a transmission output shaft speed sensor. I'm damn sure that this is your problem BECAUSE, all of these units are fed electronically by this sensor. The Speedometer , the odometer of course and the cruise control use to have a split cable that ran through a transducer for the cruise and then continued into the cluster for the other two. I believe if you jacjk up the drivers side frame about a foot you can hop in there and find the wires to the sensor pull it out, borrow the wifes car and get one for a woppind $10 bucks and replace it . No doubt all will be well then. All this is riding on the assumption that you've checked all the fuses under the hood and the dash. Good luck my man, Dana

My nephew has a 96 taurus also when his radio went out he noticed that his speedometer was not working as well so we check the fuses under the dashboard and found that a fuse from the radio memory was blown . We replaced it and the radio and speedometer and the odometer worked fine
