The egr valve on the intake might have a chunk of carbon stuck in it holding it open and that will give you a rough idle and some black smoke out of the tail pipe, its located to the left rear of the air cleaner,u can get a better look at it once you grt the air cleaner off, once u do that start it and try to push up on the diaphram in the egr with 2 fingers and see if that makes a difference,if it doesnt pull the egr off and see if anything is holding it open, hope this helps

Check engine light on, vibration at idle

Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
Some specific causes for the light to be on are:
Gas cap left off, not tightened, not installed correctly, or needs to be replaced.
02 sensor.
Engine misfire - error might clear itself after 3 complete warm-up cycles; not restarts, but warm-ups.
At start up for a bulb check - Should not stay on.

Car rough idling causes
misfiring engine is among the most common causes of a rough idle. You may notice your car idling roughly when it's in "Park" or when you're driving it and stop at a stoplight. A rough idle can be caused by damaged spark plugs or spark plug wires or a burned-out valve. It's important to address the cause as soon as possible to avoid potentially damaging the engine. Engine repairs are almost always expensive.

I have a 97 chevy tahoe 5.7 i just did a intake gasket due to the one given out truck ran fine befor i took it a part but now it runs and throws the p0300 code has a slight rough idle

P0300 random misfire, slight rough idle good , by the way your repair is good you dont want a identified misfire, Lets start by what it is not. Not a misposition sparkplug wire you would of gotten that cylinder code, as misfire, Oh try this got carburator cleaner? spray safely along the intake gasket, How about inspecting the vacuum hoses especailly at the map sensor. Here the thing you got. a vacuun leak. on a 5.7 a vacuum leak causes random misfire, by definition P0300 means 2 cylinders or more. By experience its a vacuum leak

Shut down

try this.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
