Question about 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis
Listen for motor when depressing switch, if you hear the motor then you have stripped window lift gear. They sell replacements which are often not necessary as there are 3 small nylon spacers that can be used to solve the problem, these will save you approx $30 per window. The teeth on the lift gear seldom strip out and often, you'll need little more than the 3 spacers to fix the problem. The autoparts store will try to sell you a kit which contains the gear and 3 spacers, if you swap just the gear and do not use the spacers, you will end up with the same problem again.Point is, you do not need to spend $30 on the kit, rather, you can located just the spacers in the self help section or at Lowes. Use the spacers as a reference if shopping for nylon spacers at Lowes. At a savings of $30 per window, it is worth the effort..
When you remove the electric motor, check to see if the cables for the regulator are intact. A visual inspection is an easy way to check if there is a problem. An important secondary measure is to have someone move the window up and down while you observe the drum in the regulator which the cables are wound around. If this operates smoothly, then all you need do is add the spacers to the lift gear and reinstall the motor..
If you need a new regulator, you will need to remove the doorlatch, this will give you access to one of 4 rivets that need to be drilled out to remove the regulator.
There are 2 rivets at the bottom of the door, 2 rivets inside the door cavity where the regulator attaches to the window, there are also 2 nuts at the top of the door, they are recessed but easy to spot. Drill out the 4 rivets, the 2 for the window are tricky to reach but once you remove the handle you will have access to the 4th. Do not drill out the 3 rivets around the motor, there are torx screws that you will remove instead.
Once all 4 rivets incuding the 2 rivets holding the window, the 3 torx holding the motor to the bracket and the 2 nuts holding the regukator are removed, you must pop the window out of its track then remove the defective regulator through the opening on the inside of the door. Do not try to lift it out of the top of the door. Install new regulator then pop window back into track and secure glass to regulator. You can reuse the 2 nuts you removed and you can use 4- 1" nut and bolts with some thread lock to secure the reg and glass, these will be used in place of rivets to install new reg. (If the reg doesn't include new nuts and bolts)
