Re: When shifting into reverse, back up lights do not go...
The switch is located on the transmission. It is on the side of the transmission thta faces the radiator. Have someone operate the shifter, whilst you are loking in that general area. When you see the cable move, it is connected to the switch. You may have a seized link at the switch, try spraying some WD-40 one it. There is a tiny bit of adjustment, but, if you move it too much, the car won't start, as the switch will not allow the car to start in gear. There is no repair to the switch; it is a sealed unit.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

-You mean the back up switch that turn on the back up light...?
-No light when you back up...? Possibly burn bulb or fuse as well.
Check the two above first before do any adjustment the safety switch.
It's on the transmission that the shift linkage connect to.. The whole assembly. Usually this piece is last for ever. It might need to adjust only.
-Here in case you want to adjust for back up so it can turn on the back up light.
-Lose couple bolt that hold it then ask some one to help to turn the key to on. No start. Then shift to reverse. and now you can turn the whole assembly back more or forward more to turn the on the light. When the light is working then just tight it down. You're done.
Now your helper can shift to park. and try couple more to see if it work or not.
try to remove the positive cable from the battery and switch on all lights, headlights ,park lights, step on the brake pedals , switch on ignition but do not start it. this is just to drain all remain electricity. then after doing so, switch off all the above mention lights and ignition. install back the positive cable to the battery. step on brakes pedal and start your engine, now try to shift gears from reverse to N then to P .
There may not be a wire in the dash, the connection depends on the shift lever's possition and usually a switch near the shift lever that turns the reverse lights on. If there is actually a reverse light on the dash, look for the wires to and from that light.
auto trans or manual? If auto, the difficulty could be from a failing brake light switch. That switch also controls the shift mechanism. You have to get on the floor board on the drivers side, while it is in park of course. Depress the brake pedal with your hand, you will see the switch depress. You want to remove that switch, take it to your auto store, get a new one, reverse the removal process
Sounds like the sensor for first gear.
The transmission comes with a shift sensor for each shift: if 4 shift, 4 sensor (including reverse).
Have somebody check the sensors and the cpu for the tranny. They go hand to hand.
There is a switch that controls the Neutral Safety Switch, and the Back-Up lights with the automatic transmission.
Manual trans usually have a single switch mounted where the shift rail inside the trans causes a switch to turn on the Back-up lights when you shift into reverse. Just a Back-up switch @ 15.00 + Ship on eBay for this type.
Remove cover for storage bin under stereo. One hand on each side and pull towards trunk. Remove cup holder, pull up to remove shifter cover. The light is located under the shift indicator on the left. The black component will pull up but wire for light is short so use caution and try to remove light socket with out fully removing indicator. Light bulb is a #194 or peanut bulb. Pull bulb to remove. Reverse to reinstall.
