How do I change a altinator on a 2002 Mercury Cougar

Is this a v6? It comes out through the wheel-well. So you have to safely raise and support the vehicle, remove the tire, remove tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove wheel well liner. Take negative battery cable loose, take belt loose, take wiring connectors loose from generator, remove bolts from generator, remove generator.

I'm not aware of an alternator light, only a voltage gauge. It sounds like you need a new battery. Another (cheaper/easier) troubleshooter is to take the cap off of the cells on the battery itself. If the battery acid is lower than half, add DISTILLED water to raise the level then replace the caps. Sometimes a battery dries out.

Check all the vacuum hoses and see if they are broken or disconnected. Surge in power issues, idling issues, engine stall while driving, all are related to vacuum hoses. Give a try.
