looking for install details for a parking brake shoe on 2001 chevy blazer I cant find any other illustrations or diagrams on any of the auto parts suppliers websites.A printable file would be great if available

I dont have a picture but its really simple once u get the rotor off,if i remember right these are one piece shoes,and there is i little clip that holds them against the backing plate,simply slide them out of the clip and the open end should slide off the adjuster at that point then just simply slide the open end of the shoe over the thinest part of the axle in front of the axle seal and just reverse for insall,hope this helps

I'm replacing my rear brake shoes on my 2001 chevy venture,i've assembled new parts and what has been happening is when i push on the brake pedal the adjuster actuator and actuator spring keep popping off...


Parking brake lever on leading shoe (end of retractor spring in its hole on the leading shoe). Make sure the the adjuster screw assembly is engaged properly with the leading shoe (also, engaged with the parking brake lever). Adjuster actuator installed on the trailing shoe (also, engaged with the adjuster screw assembly). After inserting the retractor spring in its hole on the trailing shoe, insert actuator spring in its hole (just below wheel cylinder) in leading shoe and stretch across and connect it to the adjuster actuator. Adjust star wheel to get shoes close to drum. Reinstall drum (shoes close with no rub). Reinstall wheel. Push brake pedal for final adjustment. Test forward. Test Backwards. If everything is in the correct place, nothing should pop off. I hope you have a before picture. Haynes manual has good pictures. I own a 2002 Pontiac Montana, but a family member has taken it out of town. My info is from the Haynes manual. I replaced the brake shoes a couple years ago.

Need instructions for installing parking brake shoes on a 2001 Dodge 3500 pickup


This is a big job for such a small part. I suggest you repair/replace rotors, pads, and anything else back there while you are at it. You will need to remove both wheels on both sides, as well as the axles (I think). See my earlier post on Rear Rotor removal to see how this is done.

You will need a large spindle nut to remove the axles.

DISASSEMBLY:
Once you have access to the parking brakes inside the rotor hat:
1. Lock out the parking brake w/a pair of Vise grips (on the parking brake cable under the cab)
2. Disengage teh park brake cable from behind the rotor assembly to allow easier disassembly of the parking brake shoes.
3. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.

REASSEMBLY:
1. Reassemble the rear parking brake shoes. This is a typical, small brake drum configuration. Do one side at a time - so you can see how to reassemble each small part. Keep the springs and parts oriented the same: front to front and interior to interior, etc.
2. Release the parking brake cable
3. Install the disc brake rotor(s)
4. Install the disc brake caliper(s)
5. Install tire & wheel assembly
6. Lower the vehicle

I cant figure out how to assemble the back brake shoes and springs back together


Maybe to late for this but if you do one side at a time just look at the other side for how they go together. Also the short shoe goes toward the front long toward the back.
1. Clean and inspect individual brake components.
2. Lubricate anchor pin an brake show contact pads on support plate with high temperature grease or
Lubriplate. See Fig. 41 .
3. Lubricate adjuster screw socket, nut, button, and screw thread surfaces with grease or Lubriplate.
4. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
5. Install parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and install retaining clip.
6. Install primary shoe on support plate. Secure shoe with new spring retainers and pin.
7. Install spring on parking brake strut and engage strut in primary.
8. Install secondary shoe on support plate. See Fig. 42 . Insert strut in shoe and guide shoe onto anchor pin.
Temporarily secure shoe with restraining pin.
9. Install anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet on support plate anchor pin.
10. Install cable guide in secondary shoe and position cable in guide.
CAUTION: Be sure the adjuster screws are installed on the correct brake unit. The adjuster screws are marked
"L" (left) or "R" (right) for identification
11. Assemble adjuster screw. See Fig. 43 . Then install adjuster screw between the brake shoes.
12. Install adjuster lever and spring, and connect adjuster cable to lever.
13. Install secondary shoe retainers and spring.
14. Install shoe spring. Connect spring to secondary shoe first, then to primary shoe.
15. Verify adjuster operation. Pull adjuster cable upward, cable should lift and rotate star wheel. Be sure
adjuster lever properly engages star wheel teeth.
16. Adjust brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES under ADJUSTMENTS.
17. Install wheel and tire assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

S 10 1997 Chevy Blazer brake locking up


Common cause is the drums and brake shoes need to be replaced. When there no longer within the the specification for the brakes to work properly, the self adjusters will over adjust the brake shoes and you'll have the feeling of the rear drum brakes lock up as the shoes will bind up along the drums. Replace both Shoes and Drums and this can be done on your own will common tools and a simple brake spring tool that you can pick up at Auto Zone or Parts Source and both can give you the step by step instructions to replacing the rear brake system. Good luck and be safe.

I need a detailed discription for reassembling of the rear brakes.


1. Raise and support vehicle
2. remove wheel
3. check to be sure parking brake is released
4. remove brake drum
5. remove brake shoe hold-down springs
6. disconnect the parking brake cable
7. Remove the lower retracting spring.
8. disconnect shoes from the anchor block
9. disconnect the shoes from the wheel cylinder
10. Remove the upper retracting spring.
11. Remove the primary shoe from the strut and brake shoe adjuster.
A- Rotate the auto-adjuster counterclockwise.
B- Remove the primary shoe.
12. Disconnect the secondary shoe from the strut support.
13. Remove the parking brake return spring.
14 Reverse order to install

My mechanic told me that the "plate" that holds my rear brakes together, including the parking brake is bad. He said that it will require taking the axel off in order to replace and the job will cost 6 to...


I'm not sure what he meant by the "plate" when you got the diagnosis. Maybe he said "rotor" or "caliper" instead?

Anyway, here's some reasonable ranges for parts and labor for a few brake-related jobs on a 2001 blazer 4WD. If you combine jobs, the labor price might go down (since the mechanic doesn't have to do all the steps for each job) but the parts prices are going to be constant:

Replace rear calipers:
parts - $150 - $500, depending on if you get used or new parts
labor - $100 - $150

Replace rear brake shoes and resurface (smooth off) rotors:
parts - $40 - $130, depending on performance vs economy shoes
labor - $200 - $250

Replace rear brake shoes and replace rear rotors:
parts - $130 - $400, again depending on performance vs economy parts
labor - $150-$190

None of those look like "remove the rear axel" kinds of labor rates, so either your mechanic is full of beans, or I'm not guessing correctly what he has identified as the problem.

Post back if you can get more details on this "plate" -- specifically the exact name of the part being replaced -- and I can get you ballpark repair costs.

check the tranny fluid level, then make sure the parking brake shoes are not rusted in place, if its a auto trans the coverter has drained all the fluid,

Drum Removal
  1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.
