Right john a ford cortina is easier to repair,but??---well without haveing the jam jar in front of me its difficult to tell exactly what the problem is mate ,it could be a worn lift pump and that incorperated in the injector pump so its a garage job to remove it and overhaul it,Dont rhink its anything stupid like a fuel filter but you could try changing it anyway ,Whats the smoke like when its first started and when its running till the engine warms up.As i said without it front of me its difficult to diagnose because a lot of other factors are involved like hydraulic tappets gummed up,worn valve seats or pistons and rings and from what i hear from people who are on holiday the car is worth thousand pounds if your lucky in the uk ,about 2000/3000euros here in spain so it might pay you to trade it in on the scrappage scheme

My hiace turbo turns over ..but is very sluggish until it heats up a bit..then seems to run thinking glowplugs..

not sure of what you mean
glow plugs are there to assist the instant start of the diesel engine
it will wind over well without the plugs operating but takes longer to heat the compressed air in the cylinders to fire the diesel being sprayed in
if it starts and is still sluggish to respond to the accelerator , that is a different problem to the glow plugs
I'm thinking low fuel pressure if common rail diesel and bad injectors squirting and not atomizing
have a proper diagnosis done by an accredited professional diesel repair shop

2002 turbo diesel mazda bravo starts and runs fine but will not rev past 2500rpm it blows out a heap of smoke and will rev no further

diesels are not known to be high revving engines to begin with, anyways, it sounds like your turbo is malfunctioning, get it inspected or repaired

Ford transit t350 loss of acceleration

have you tried bypassing the turbo to check if the turbo is helping? is the pump calibrated well? check all the hoses from the turbo especially the turbo boost compensator hose that goes to the injection pump or something like it

Renault Scenic blew up after long drive

yes see this all the time, turbo has failed the compressor side.
oil has been feed straight into your engine and lit, this acts as fuel and the faster the engine the more oil, no rev limiter either.
some times it can bend a conrod.
see if the car starts now. if so and runs happy (please note it will not rev up until warm) dont run for no more than 30 seconds.
what you are looking for is a lumpy engine and lots of white smoke. if so you have bent a con rod.
if not remove all turbo pipes and clean out oil, replace turbo.

My proplem is car starts fine hot or cold but once

If your coil packs have been failing this can also make the cat fail. I have heard of many instances of this happening. Get an emmisions test done. If the cat has failed dont pay mazda price get one of the net for the fraction of the price which is just as good

1992 gmc sierra turbo diesel starts and idles fine until warm up

It's time for a Italian tune up!

The blue smoke can be one of two thing.

oil drop from the valve stem (from engine head to cyclinders)
diesel soot collect inside the exhaust system.

I will take a 5-10 minutes high rpm (not redline) ran on the highway.
Pay close attention to the rear view mirror and look for black diesel soot.
=== I will use Diesel Cleen or similar product to condition the fuel. (keep moisture down)
Use the recommended amount of SEAFOAM oil additive to condition the valve stem seal/rubber parts.

I can not rule out excessive blown by.
Can you get a diesel compression tester?
When was the last valve adjustment?

Please post the actual odometer on the engine and I will follow up on it.

Have you had the injector recall check carried out? There is a problem with these injectors and this produces the symptoms you are describing. I suggest that you contact Isuzu direct for help. They have been very helpful in the case of my trooper
