If its original its not that bad just have to cut the rivets of the old ball joint body and remove it from the control arm,and just remove the 7/8" nut from the stem still in the spindle and beat it out with a hammer, hope this helped

Ball joints

If your ball joints all need to be replaced, you need two lowers and two uppers. Get quality joints, no duralast. Napa has some quality joints...

You will also need a ball joint press, you can rent this at any local parts store, autozone I think has them, you put down money and if you bring the tool back, you get tour money back in full. You will also need a cc axle socket or spindle socket depending on 2wd vs 4wd.

If you have a 2wd it's a little more simple, jack truck up, remove wheels, remove upper joint nut pin and take the **** off. Use te press to remove joint. Press in new joint, attach spindle to joint in reverse of removal, insert nut pin, and grease it up using a grease gun with a zero fitting attachment. Flexible hose on the gun will be better the. The solid tube type. Do the same for the bottom. And repete for the other side.

You may also fine a hammer handy, and normal tabs tools such as sockets and ratchets.

Get an alignment right after especially if you end up needing to remove the tie rods. Simple job, but time consuming especially for your first time.

Gotta learn sooner or later!

There are many chevy forums online that will help out tremendously if it turns out to be more difficult then expected.

Lower ball joint broke and i need to replace it. How do i take it off and put a new one in.(do i need a ball joint press) 98 Chevy Silverado 1500

jack up the the side with the broken ball joint under the control arm.
Remove the axle nut (4x4)
remove the caliper and the rotor.
remove the outer tie rod from the knuckle.
Remove the upper and lower control arm nuts and remove knuckle from vehicle.

Using a ball joint press remove and install the ball joint.

tighten axle nut (4x4 only) to 133 lb-ft after everything is assembled.

Front end bushing and ball joint do you need to change upper and lower bushings at same time and how hard is to them

It's not required to change the upper and the lower at the same time. However it will save you time if you do them both as if one is going out the other will soon.
The actual job is not that difficult but you may need a pickle fork or a ball joint removal tool to disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckle. You will also need a ball joint press to remove/install the ball joints. You may also need a strut spring compressor. You can rent these at an auto parts store.
Basically you have to do the following -loosen lug nuts -jack the vehicle up and place on jack stands -remove wheel -remove upper ball joint cotter pin and nut -remove lower ball joint cotter pin and nut -with pickle fork/ball joint removal tool remove both upper and lower ball joints from steering knuckle -disconnect tie rod end from knuckle (optional depending on clearance) -disconnect strut (be sure to install strut spring compressors) -with ball joint press you will need to press both ball joints out (you also use the press to install ball joints)
Installation is reverse of removal.
For exact instructions you can buy the manual for about $20 or go to autozone.com, register, and view the manual on their site for free.

Are the ball joints on a 97 Nissan Altima pressed in? Basically just want to know if I can fix this with common tools.

there are ball joints on the bottom of the control arm and the upper "ball joints" are the upper strut mount attacthed to the strut holding the spring in place. the lower ball joing can be replaced removing the c clip on top and hammering out. be careful not to damage the arm. worse case you may need to remove the lower control arm and take to a machine shop to press out the old and press in the new. if you have a large vice, you may be able to do it too with some deep set sockets and the vice.

Upper ball joint broke off of socket on 97 chevy s10 pickup

Its not too difficult if you can get the broken piece out of the spindle. It is a friction fit and normally a wedge shaped tool called a pickle fork is used to separate the ball joint and spindle.
If you're game to have a go at it, jack the truck up and block it, you will need the jack to put under the lower control arm after you take the wheel off. Remove the caliper and hang it up with a piece of wire or rope so it doesn't hang on the brake hose. With the wheel off you will need to remove the nut on the bottom of the ball joint where it passes through the spindle. Check it first for a cotter pin, some have it some don't.Soak it good with penetrating fluid, not WD-40, before you start. If the piece starts to turn before you get the nut off, you'll have to cut it off with a mini grinder.Drive the broken piece out of the spindle, it has to go up because it is tapered, you can't push it out the bottom.
The rest of the ball joint should be attached to the upper control arm by 3 rivets. Just grind the heads off them, drive them out and the ball joint will come off. The new one will probably come with bolts to replace those rivets, but check the box when you buy it and make sure you have some. Pop the new joint into the control arm, it'll only fit one way and fasten it down. Jack the spindle up to the ball joint, fit it together and start the nut. Snug it up and lower the jack. Now tighten the nut. If you are using a 3/8 ratchet when your arm wont turn the nut any more install the cotter pin and you should be good. It would be a good idea to get the alignment checked after you do this. Hope this helps.

Is it difficult to replace the upper ball joint and any special tools required??

It is if you do not have the right tools. You will need a ball joint remover, it looks like a 2 prong fork that widens, this will seperater the ball joint form the wheel assembly. If it is not pressed in you will be ok, or you will need a bid c clamp a deep well socket to slip over the threaded pard of the ball joint, and small enough to slip though with the ball joint. to put it reverse the opperation. if it is a sealed unit you would have to take it off and take it out with a hyd press.
