Bad connection between Starter brushes and armature is probally the cause. Clean armature where brush contacts it or replace starter.

Starting problem

1. Test battery (Should read 12.5-13v). If not charge or get tested, may need replacement.
2. If battery is good, take a pair of jumper cables, connect Black lead between (-) Negative side and the the block of the engine (often there are metal brackets, etc they make good connection points). Then connect the Red lead, between the the (+) Positive side of battery and JUST TAP the end to battery connection on the starter solenoid to see if engine turns over. CAUTION: Engine vehicle is in Park, parking brake set, and will not move before attempting this procedure.
2a. If this does not turn over engine, remove starter and have it tested at an auto parts store.
2b. If it does turn over there are two paths to further troubleshoot. (1) check battery cables. One way to do this is to turn the ignition key on, and attempt to start the car by the method described in 2.. BUT EXTRA CAUTION: Engine vehicle is in Park, parking brake set, and will not move before attempting this procedure. (2) if the truck did not start in (1), then you will have to wire trace the starting circuit checking all fuses, connections, etc. (local auto parts stores or often local library, carry Haynes Manuals that have wiring diagrams int the back)

Best of luck resolving this problem.

Chevy tahoe 96 will not start. I have replace the electric fuel pump and that is working. Truck will not turn over.

Hello,

If the engine is not turning over, you most likely have a dead battery, or your starter is bad. If the battery is going dead, you will hear clicking sound and the lights will dim. If you have jumper cables hooked up between the Tahoe and a car that is already running and it still won't start, I would remove the starter and bring it to a place like Autozone or Advance Auto Parts, where they will test it for free.

I hope this helps you!

I have a 6.2 with two new batterys and a new starter. The batterys are charged when I turn the key the day time running lights, and dash turn on very dim. The van will not turn over but the starter clicks...

Hi, I recommend you swap out the starter relay in the relay box under the hood. You can borrow the A/C relay to see if that fixes the problem. If this doesn't work, try a jump start and get back to me with results.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over . These are generic instructions.

Why won't my '98 Chevy Malibu start, it just clicks??? YET, it HAS POWER!? I have a '98 Chevy Malibu. We turned it off after driving for about 5 minutes that day, came back 5 minutes later and it acted...

You know the 97 to 04 Malibu is noted for intake manifold leaking antifreeze into the engine. A little antifreeze in a cylinder can keep the piston from moving in compression stroke. Take a look at the spark plugs, see if any of them have antifreeze on them and maybe the starter will spin the crank with the plugs out.

Car won't start. The battery and alternator are

If you can jump and start the car then the starter is good.

I had a similar situation where the battery tester showed 13V and green/good LED but I could not start my car. After many tests, I found out that the battery had good Voltage (13V) but not enough Amperage to crank the starter.
I replaced the battery and the car started like a champ!.

- clue to see if you need to replace the battery is if you have used it for
about 3 years or more.
- Dead battery happens a lot more often than bad alternator.

1994 ford tempo will not start only clicks

Hook your voltage tester to the battery, then have a helper try to start the car. Watch the voltage when you hear the click. If it drops much under 12v then odds are the battery is no good. Have it load tested at your local autoparts store

1988 Ford E350 with 2 batteries won't start, just clicks

It has to have 2 batteries because it is a diesel engine. Diesels use compression to fire the combustion mixture instead of a spark plug as a gasoline engine does. It has glow plugs that heat the mixture up before starting to help promote this and it has probably twice the compression ratio, therefore it takes alot of amps to start it and that is why you have 2 batteries. No it still only has one solenoid for the starter but it has to use a gear reduction starter instead of a conventional one.

2001 Chevrolet Tahoe won't start

Set your multimeter to 20 volts and put red lead to the positive out of the alt. and the black lead to the neg. side of the battery or the frame.

It should read 13.8 - 14.6 volts. Don't try to test the AMPs, as this will blow out your multimeter.
