If its the first time there being taken off some times there are locks around the lugs that the company puts on to hold the drums in place while on the line there are two or three of them you must take them off first.

Spray solvent into the wheel lug openings in the drum and around the center. Use a hammer to shock the drum, striking it between the studs and around the outside perimeter. if you can get to the adjuster, back it off so the shoes will clear the lip on the drum. Worst case, if you get it free but can't get it off, cut the two pins that you will see on the backing plate (half way from the bottom about an inch from the edge, appear as two round dots about 1/4" in diameter, 180 degrees apart), that hold the shoes to the plate. These are easily replaced and available at any parts store (cheap) and, many are in poor condition to begin with.

Make sure you don't have the Emergency Brake on (Hand Brake). This will engage the Brake Shoes to the Drum making it very hard to pull the drum.I am assuming that you know ,have read how to remove the drum.

I believe you have drum brakes on the rear of your Caravan, & it sounds like you have a wheel cylinder leaking, it will have to be replaced. This is what it looks like. Parts & labor to do a rear brake job should run around $220.00....Shop around and get a few estimates. Good luck, i hope this helps.

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan

The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

How do you get the rear brake drum off a 2000 dodge grand caravan

there should be an inspection hole on the back side, try reaching inside with a screw driver to back the linings off it will turn hard put thats the way you want to turn, if it turns easy you will tighten the linings to the drum, then simply TAP on the outter edges of the drum will spinning it. lil lube will help.

Trying to remove rear break drum for 2000 grand caraven do not see a star wheel to contract brake shoes

HI

Imagine looking at a star from the side. All you will see are the points of the star.

The star wheel you are looking for is partially protruding sideways through a slot behind the drum.

Hope this helps

Can't get the rear drum off my 2000 dodge caravan.

After the wheel is removed you need to spray penetrating oil around the lug studs. Next, hit the drum with a hammer between the studs until it pops, now pull it off.

you can tap on the drum with a hammer they should come right off but don't beat on them as they will break if you hit to hard and if the brake shoes are to tight they need to be adjusted looser before you try to remove the drums
