Question about 2003 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Popping and clicking in 2003 dodge durango steering column, it feels as if the column is loose at some point, it's not in the front end, it seems to be from the firewall up to the steering wheel

The noise also happens when the vehicle is parked, if you spin the steering wheel from left to right it feels like something in it is loose, as if there were a bad u-joint in the column. But thanks for your input. Still searching.

I believe there is a replacement steering shaft from dodge to get rid of this noise, the dakotas have the same problem,it comes from the shaft design and the flex of the body mounts when u accel or deccel, hope this helps

I want to know what is the name of the part that is connected to the steering rack and runs up and connects to my steering wheel. It looks like it has a yoke and universal joints on both ends. When I turn...

some parts stores and dealerships just call it the steering shaft, and some call it a sector shaft even though it really isn't,if there is a clicking noise it maybe the bearing assembly in the end of the steering column where the steering column exits the firewall & just after the auto transmission shift linkage connects to the arm on the column there is a bearing in there and it can get a build up of grime in it sometimes you can spray it with wd-40 while someone rotates the steering wheel back and fourth and after that spray a little bit of chain lube in it.If that is not it have the air bag "Clock Spring"and components checked out hope this helps point you in the right direction

Front end noise. sounds like the spin cycle on a washing machine. a little vibration but not much. starts at approx 30 mph. seems like the left side but am not sure.

I can only guess without actually seeing the vehicle, that you've got a warp in one of the front tire steel belts or if the steering wheel is not shaking at low speeds than you've probably got the begginings of a failing water pump. Both of these would give approximately the same sounds but a different feel.

2003 Dodge Durango clunking noise in front end can be felt in steering column ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, sway bar bushings replaced, shocks replaced steering column bushings checked all...

With the information given this is not a sure solution. Questions that need to be asked is when does this happen, turning at slow speedm high speed, when hitting a pot hole etc? Since you have replaced a lot of things already, assuming you have NEW good quality parts so you did not replace bad parts with new bad parts i would definitelu check the pitman arm. This runs from the stering gear to the tierod. It can give you some good clunks while steering, especially at low speed when there is a lot of resistance. Check it by having someone turning the steering wheel when watchin/feeling it.

I have a 2003 chevy silverado and i've noticed when i turn corners like a weird feeling in the steering wheel like something is loose or clicking, my front end needs alignment but i don't know if that...

This is caused by the steering intermediate shaft being loose. GM has had several problems with these on several different models. Replace this and it will feel like a new truck again. P.S. this will not affect your front end alignment so you can have your truck aligned before or after replacing the steering intermediate shaft.
