SOURCE: fuel gauge not working. Always

There a very small current pot in the fuel tank. It's shot. Go to the local auto parts store and shop around for lower prices. Purchase the sening unit for you type vehcile and year, make, engine size, If it has squar wheel the price of the sending could be more. Just tell them your auto has round wheels. GB....stewbison

My fuel gauge read empty even with a full tank of gas

Probable causes:

  1. Wire from dash gauge to sending unit is broken or the connection is corroded hindering electrical connection.
  2. Resistance wire inside sending unit is broken
  3. Lack of proper grounding between sending unit and tank or between tank and chassis
Narrow the cause by testing. At the bottom on the following webpage you will find testing procedures as well as repair. (It is always helpful to mention brand and model and year).

Why fuel gauge not working gas guage on 2009 santa fe stays on empty even with a full tank of gas. Guage fluctuates from empty to 3/4 full to empty to 1/3 full at any given time.

It could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash. A mechanic would test the signal coming from the sending unit to verify.

I got a 2001 Chevy Venture and fuel gauge always stays on full

The problem is in the fuel sender unit in the tank. It sounds like the float part of the sender unit is binding when it's at the top (when tank is full) and hangs up there till it falls back down when tank is near empty. It will likely have to come out to be checked, fixed, or replaced. Good luck.

Gas gauge reading empty even when tank is full

Usually if the gas gage does not work yes it is true it may be the sensor if it is electronicly controlled. the sncor will more than likley be in the tank. here is how to remove your gas tank.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the fuel tank.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Fuel filler and vent hoses
    • Fuel tank skid plate
    • Fuel tank wiring connectors
    • Fuel supply and return lines
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel pump assembly

You don;t say whether the fuel gauge is reading accurately, or whether it's always on empty. If the gauge is always showing empty, it's most likely a problem with the sending unit in the fuel tank. Check the resistance across the two terminals of the sending unit.

On a C900, the fuel sender level unit is separate from the fuel pump and located on the right side top of the tank, accessible by removing the trunk floor lift up panel (the pump is located on the left side top of the tank.
Possible problems are: electrical line off or broken, float not working (it's fairly delicate); or gauge not working.

Test the resistance of the sending unit with the lines disconnected, the resistance should be 2.6 to 3.8 ohms full tank, 63.3 to 67.5 ohms empty tank; and test for voltage across the top of the sender unit, if no voltage, that's likely the problem!

If the gauge is otherwise reading accurately (showing 'full' for a full tank, etc) then the problem is likely a gauge malfunction and can be simply replaced.

Good luck!
