Whilst driving, my E280 gear box moved into neutral for about a second or two, and it shifted into the next gear with a strong sudden ****.

seems like faulty transmission, the reason is when you drive the car gears are up shift form 1 to 2 , 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, like that it should be 7 speed auto trans mission in your car, if you mention when which gear up shift the problem occurred I can give more information about what's the fault in transmission, so according to your details it's like two gears are engage together, when two gears are engage same time the transmission control unit understand it's something getting wrong in the transmission according to actual value of gear ratio, then trans mission change the gear to neutral for a second and after that it give the one lower gear than the gear which was stuck and drive fine, this thing might not happen all the time but is the problem verse it can happen all the time, the solution is you must get your car to the Mercedes dealer workshop then they can find what's the wrong inside the transmission before remove it, they have advance diagnose tool for it, then they will repair your transmission, this is the cheapest way, if some one repair your transmission without right understanding regarding what's the exactly fault you will be stuck, may have to be remove again and again,

Vibration somewhere in the drive trane when accelerating. truck has 125.000 miles.

apply emergency brake.put truck in netural.block wheels.underneath truck try to rotate drive shaft back & forth--more than a little 'play' could indicate universal joints need replacement.

Oil light is on also have some valve trane chatter trans also not wanting to go into gear

sell time sounds like oil pump either stopped up or pump failure.....transmission if fluid level good...bad tranny good luck with junk yards common failure... good chance of getting a bad one causing another r and r ....walk away call it the end

Many transmission shops have a "flight recorder" that they can attach to the system and drive the vehicle. If that has not been done perhaps it will help. Odds of getting another transmission with the exact problem as the original are pretty slim, so I'd tend to think its on the control side. Have you checked the MAP sensor? often the shift module gets its info from there too.

sounds like the tranny pump is going bad or bad band in drive trane

its most likely the transmission i have a 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo 12 yrs old went about 3 months ago.i would take off at normall speed and it would rev. to about 3,000 RPMS and then the gear would catch ,and give u but then it got worse. it would be fine taking off then while i was driving ,,i would be going any speed but wen i got up to speed it would start reving high [the gear was sliping] and i had to get it rebult it was like $3'000 grand plus
