Before ruling out alternator even after changeing it make sure it is chargeing with a volt meter and after that I would look real hard at all the ground wires.New parts do go bad.I get them from time to time.

How can i get teh dashboard lights to turn off?

dash lights come on with the light switch so if you turn off the lights and the dash lights are still on then the problem will be in the switch or if you have auto lights then the problem maybe in the auto module.

Hi Martin Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Martin, the charging system has what you call a fusible link that runs from the positive battery terminal all the way to the alternator. Somewhere along that fusible link it has either corrosion built up are has been damaged and came apart. usually its a large green wire but is different on some vehicles. My chec engine light comes on after driving for a while, typically 20 miles or so on the freeway, a guy at checker said possibly something in the cat, and recommended sea foam, I know the alternator or the...

Check engine like is it red or yellow? if it's yellow it could be a misfiring spark plug, or a lazy 02 sensor, that means you drive the truck till it gets in closed loop then the 02 sensor is connected to fuel trim and is not changing fast enough causing the light to come on. Since the 02 sensor is bypassed until engine is warm this could be your issue, it could also be a spark plug wire or even the heater on the 02 sensor, since it's a 89 it has a sensor on each side of the engine and one after the cat, if there is a spark plug problem if the check engine light starts flashing it means a catastrophic misfire that will destroy the cat so it is a fuel or spark problem.

When was the alternator replaced? was it a remanufactured alternator? This is common on GM trucks, fluctuating voltage is caused by a faulty alternator voltage regulator. Have the alternator tested, strong possiblityits defective!!Hopefully this helps!!

2005 silverado z71 5.3. Under normal acceleration all lights will pulse rapidly (at least once a second or faster). Checked alt output at idle- 15.3/15.5 Didnt have a second person to throttle it to check...

Yes,it is,the alternator is charging to much, this can lead to other component failures.Have the alternator changed, not just the regulator in the alternator,if a diode has burned threw,it can,and most likely is,putting out some ac voltage, witch is very bad for the ignition system, and it will put ac voltage in the battery. The pulsing is from ac voltage, not just a dc overcharge. The alternator should be 13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts,at the battery. Most of the time, when there is a pulse,in the lighting, and the alternator is charging around 15 volts, there is ac volts present.so this means, the battery would need to be changed also,to prevent any other problems.I hope this was helpful, and if so,please let us know, thank you.
