Question about 1994 GMC Safari

Engine won't turn over completely...told it might be fuel pump.

I had a "brake inspector' try to jump start my 6 cylinder 1994 GMC pickup and told me it wasn't the battery or the alternator because it attempts to start but can't complete. It sounds like it wants to, but is unable to follow through. He suggested that it might be the fuel pump and it would be $400-500. Does this sound like the most plausible cause?

The engine isn't turning over upon attempting to start the vehicle. It isn't moving at all, but wants to start. Coughing, I guess is the best way of saying it. The brake inspector opened the gas tank to see if the increased pressure from the outside would "push" the gas through, but that didn't help at all. Do you think it could be the spark plugs? Or is it the fuel pump?

Is the engine turning over at the CORRECT speed and not starting? Or is the engine not turning over correctly?

So, the engine "IS" turning over but not starting. Yes it sounds like the fuel pump but you can tell for sure with these small steps. Grab a friend and have him turn the key on(not over) just to the run position. Do this a few times in a row. With your ear to the fuel filler tube, cap off, you should hear the pump run for about 2 seconds then stop each time the key is turned on. This is an automatic primer for the fuel system. If you hear nothing have them turn the engine over for about 5 seconds, again you should hear the pump. If you dont, check the fuses and the relays before you take that big dive. Yes the costs are approximatly correct.

Yes that or the fuel filter. These fuel pumps are bad about going out. His cost range is about right, but the pump itself is under 100.00. The cost comes from the labor involved in dropping the tank.

That is the most plausible cause. This can be determined by using throttle body cleaner. Spray into the intake while trying to start the vehicle. If the vehicle fires on the spray, then it's not getting gasoline. So the fuel pump is probable.

Lets start at the beginning. Did anyone check fuel pressure before and after replacing the pump ?
Has anyone checked the fuel pressure regulator and the injector spider ? The 4.3w engine uses a spider with one injector that supplies all 6 cylinders. And it runs at 65psi or more.

94 gmc sierra 4.3 v6 manual, won't turn over, can hear fuel pump start when accessories turned on..won't fire, girl who needs help

The first thing I would check is fuel pressure. This type of fuel injection requires a minimum fuel pressure in order to operate. If fuel pressure is as little as one psi below minimum the vehicle will not start. You can try squirting a couple of shots of carb spray into the air snorkel while somebody cranks the engine over. If the engine starts and then dies you now you fpdeffinetely have a fuel issue. If the engine still won't start check for spark. Let me know what you find. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

1999 gmc sierra 2500 6 liter ran out of gas now won't start

If you are at or near the 100,000 mile mark then your fuel pump may have failed. If you remove the fuel filler cap and listen carefully at the filler neck while someone turns the ignition key to "run" [don't actually crank the engine] you should be able to hear the fuel pump buzz for about a second and a half as the key is turned On. If you don't hear the pump buzz then odds are your pump is dead. Your pump may have actually failed making it appear as though you ran out of fuel. Not to uncommon. Hope this helps and good luck!

Fuel pump not turning on. Won't fire but will turn over. swapped out relay, still not fire.

Try banging on the fuel tank, and then quickly try to start it, if it starts your fuel pump is almost dead and will need replaced soon.
If it doesn't start, test for power at the wiring connector on top of the fuel tank. This test requires 2 people, because the fuel pump is only powered for a few seconds when the engine isn't running. If you have power, then the problem is in the fuel pump (completely failed or bad wiring connection on the pump/inside the sending unit)

My 1993 gmc truck wont start it cranks over but doesnt start

Are you getting fuel? if the pump is out then you won't get fuel and it won't start. Check for fuel at the throttle body under the air cleaner also pull a plug and connect it to the wire and ground it to the engine block to see if your getting spark. try this and let me know. I suspect the fuel pump since these last around 8-10 years before they just quit.

1994 gmc surburban turns over fine but engine won't start

You can check to see if the fuel pump is bad..Remove gas cap and listen into tank while another person turns key on.If you here a buzzing noise the fuel pump is most likely OK...If you don't here anything Check owners manual for fuse location and check to see if there are any blown..There is also a fuel relay fuse under the hood

Has not been started in 6 years, have replaced

Was there fuel in the tank when parked 6 years ago? If there was, it has gone bad, and you are going to have to drop the tank and flush all the fuel lines, and clean the injectors, replace the fuel filter. I have let a car sit for a year or a bit more, and been able to start it, but after 6 years, the gas turns to varnish, and plugs up everything. You will probably also have issues with the brakes. You will find out as soon as you drive the Jimmy, usually the brakes will drag, and require bleeding of all lines, and usually caliper and brake cylinder rebuild. Good luck.

Well, if it's not getting gas have you confirmed power and ground to the fuel pump? If you jump the fuel pump relay does it star?
