The pipe leading to the muffler snapped in half due to rust. Is this a "diy" project or is it best to take it in to my mechanic?

It is best to take it to the muffler shops , it is a under the car project and is very messy , lots of falling rust stuck (rusted together ) parts and it is almost impossible to refit the new pipes and there could be alterations to the hangers . save yourself a headache the labor on replacing a exhaust system is not that much your going to have close to the same cost doing it yourself .

My car's resonator was little bend and I changed resonator in a service center for my Toyota Corolla 2000. Now they said that during installation of resonator, front pipe bolt kit fell off due to rust....

Exhausts can rust. and is totally unlimited.
buy a new cat back system, if that part is bad.
why not just take it to a muffler shop and ask the man to fix it.
he will.
my guess is that resonator is the back end part.
if true, get a whole new cat back system. pipes, miff, and res.
in fact you can do this if you buy a OEM fit cat back kit.
it just bolts on, in 1hr work.
its not hard to do
but expect bolts to snap, and have a plan for that......

DIY Replace Back Muffler / Resonator with Straight PipeSubject: DIY Replace Back Muffler / Resonator with Straight Pipe
Title: Increase Fuel MPG by Replacing Back Muffler

Overview:
When your back muffler fails, and or if you want a bit more gas milage, replacing the back muffler with a straight pipe seems to work fine and increase MPG. This is much cheaper than purchasing a back muffler with DIY or to have a local customer shop install a straight pipe.

Symptoms:
Back muffler failing, onion peeling and / or holes in the back muffler.

Experience Level:
Medium

Tools Needed:
Hack Saw, Ratchets, Wrenches, etc.

Time Needed:
About 1 hour:

Parts Needed:
Pipe parts from local auto store. Exhaust sealers, hangers, pipe tip (stainless)

Procedure:
Remove the back muffler by cutting the pipe before the muffler about 2 inches in front of the muffler. Replace with straight pipe components or have a shop do it. You will need some time to get it 100% right. It took me a couple of tries.

Outcome:
- Money savings in replacement.
- Slightly louder, but not much. Actually a better sound (subjective)
- 1-5 MPG gas savings, especially on open road.

Discussion:
I have done this on a 99 9-5 I4 for about 1 year now and it seems to be working fine. I am getting about 3+ MPG on the open road since this was done. It is an automatic with 140k miles solid 29-30 MPG with regular fuel on the open road. I really do not see the need for the back muffler / resonator at the present time.

I will be doing this on a 2001 V6 wagon soon. The muffler will be failing soon.

Convert dual exhaust on 99 sunfire gt to single?

You can cut out the Y pipe and replace it with a flex pipe from parts store, then clamp each end of the flex pipe, the pipe diameter will be 1-7/8 or 2 inch, also for the pipe replacement piece would work from a sunfire or cavalier from 1995 and up, might need to replace the muffler strap too. as it can break from rusting, if not already rusted and broken.

I have water leaking off the exhaust pipe but not at the end it's off the muffler part

Some mufflers have a hole in them so it can get rid of the water your car is making. This way they do not rust out.

Ford Escape with rusted, broken bolts/muffler hanging loose from catalytic converter estimate/fix

That is a pretty common issue with the escapes. Most of the time the broken bolts can be removed and new bolts along with a gasket can be installed and everything is fine. Sometimes the flanges are to rusted and the two pieces need to be replaced. Just depends on the vehicle.

Muffler pipe rusted and broke clean in half, but actual muffler is new.

NEED TO TAKE VECHICLE TO MUFFLER SHOP LET THEM FIX RUST PIPE WITH A NEW PIPE.LET MUFFLER SHOP FIX BECAUSE THEY CAN WELD JOINT SEAL BOTH NEW EXHAUST PIPE AND NEW MUFFLER SO YOU WONT GET CARBON MONOXIDE POISON LET MUFFLER SHOP CHECK ALL THE EXHAUST SYSTEM BECAUSE THE WHOLE SYSTEM COULD BE RUSTED DROP DOWN WHILE DRIVING YOU PROBABLY NEED NEW EXHAUST PIPE HANGERS.

The shaft leading to the muffler came undone. How

You mean the exhaust pipe fell off the muffler. The pipe is likely rusted off and the pipe will need replaced. Do you know any exhaust shops?

I have 96 Caprice Classic...muffler has begun making quite a throaty rumble...I took to Monro Muffler...they said I need to replace from Manifold all the way to back....they want some $600. Anybody have...

I can't see your exhaust system, but I do recommend that you have them show you the "why" of it. Generally the front pipe and the cat last a long time and generally don't need to be replaced very often. If the flanges are rusted and have failed there are "wrap around" replacements that can be used without pipe replacement. Most common is to change everything from the cat back. As I said, have them actually show you what is wrong...or take it to another shop and without telling them the original findings, have them look at it!!! Since there is very little involved except a visual inspection, most shops will not charge or will charge very little for this.

Muffler is loud and rattles due to debris and possible hole

either live with it or get out a saw and cut it out and weld in a new exhaust muffler. or you might get the measurements and get one to fit where you cut out the old one from your parts store.. make sure you measure your pipe and get a muffler that will fit over the pipe .. You will need clamps for the muffler also.. thanks and holler if you need more Jerry
