Question about 1991 Toyota Camry

Camry 1991- really sluggish and jerky

My dad died 4 months ago and we have just got the car for our daughter who just got her licence. It starts okay but really sluggish and splutters. The water and oil are fine, my dad had it serviced just before he died, what is likely to be the problem and it is more likely to cost more than it's worth. Thanks.

It's full and would have been in it for 4 months as we haven't filled it and only got it from dad's house this week.

  • jentom1960 Sep 05, 2009

It's full of petrol but would have been in it for about 4 months as we picked it up from my dad's house and it was on full, he has been dead for about 4 months.

Thank you so much for you advice, will look at filters etc, it seems a good sturdy car for first car, so hoping good service does the trick.

It's just going to take some time and simple cleaning. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, you can buy all the things needed to get the car running 100% again in no time at all for under $40.00. Here is a few things that I do when i get a new car with a few years under it's wheels. Buy a bottle of injector cleaner for the fuel injectors, like STP, a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil to add to the engine oil, and two can's of Throttle body cleaner for the throttle body and follow the instructions on the can. Make sure it's throttle body cleaner. The Carburetor cleaner is to corrosive for the throttle body gasket. Once you have reached 3,000 miles, service the engine and have them replace the oil (5W-30) and filter and add another Marvel Mystery Oil. This will clean out all the carbon and sludge in the engine to free up the oil passage ways, replace the Air filter, and PVC valve every 30,000 miles or once a year. Cleaning out the throttle body and adding the fuel injector cleaner will also help the fuel system and have them replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles or once a year to ensure there is no fuel restrictions in the fuel system. Once this has been done you will notice the engine runs like new and you may have to use the Marvel Mystery Oil and fuel injector cleaner every 6 months to keep the internal engine free from sludge and carbon. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you keep the car running 100% for a long time.

Most likely the fuel filter(s) is/are clogged also, the fuel injectors could be clogged or, even the air filter dirty or, in backwards. the wide-open trhottle valve (wot) can bind due to being left without starting for some time; in storage or, the car being "drive like grandma would" slowly.
if your strapped for cash: take the car to your local high school auto shop class they will fix it for free if not any competent garage should be able to fix it easily and, cheaply. Congradulations on having a new driver in the family!

If you manage to get it started, check the alternator output...I'm betting it is bad. Should be making no less than 12.5 with accessories all on, 13.5 to 14 with just engine running. Bad alt can drain battery even when off depending what failed inside it. Towing with a chain is not really a good idea. the cross pin in those differentials are not very good and can fail.

dirty injectors.....coil...plugs....where to begin is the better question. Check your plugs...and dump in a bottle of fuel system cleaner. If that doesnt cut it that narrows it down to your coil not firing...or an injector thats just bad. If its anything more serious like a valve not closing thats out of your hands but try these simple tricks first.

Engine dies at idle, was slow to start

Two things that I would look at:

1.) The spark plugs should be changed at this mileage

2.) She may be having the beginnings of an Idle Control Valve ("IAC") failure.

The security LED blinking is normal

The horn issue may be a weak battery on the keyless entry remote transmitter
