Hyundai tiburon running at high rpms when shifting would seem as if your trans is having a bit of a hard time shifting so its sort of waiting before it can shift to the next gear (possible the gear system is having a problem shifting due to it sticking to some gears) i'd have to say....a mechanic can take a look to see why its seemingly shifting late at high RPMs to me IMO the trans is just having a hard time shifting with gears wanting to stick together making the whole trans have a hard time shifting

Transmission making loud grinding/sucking sound, doesn't go when in drive or reverse

Is it an automatic John? When was the last time you checked the level of your ATF (automatic transmission fluid)?

There are many different types, so make sure you get the right one.

If it is a manual shift, check the gearbox oil level. If that is OK, you need a transmission specialist. Look in Yellow Pages.

My car will not shift up gears

the point is that there is an onboard reporting system that you can have the fault codes read from
That report indicates exactly the area if the fault and saves money
so have the codes read at any parts shop or autozone for free and then have that only fixed

My 1984 subaru GL (1.8, std trans, 4x4) has an exhaust backfire. sometimes only small pops, but occasionally sounds like I fired a .357... only in between shifts, or in gear after I let off the gas at...

Replace the distibutor cap and rotor along with the spark plug wires this should stop the problem, sometimes the problem can also be caused by too much fuel entering the engine.

Won't go higher then 2nd gear, AT and Check Engine light have come on.

seems to be a shot gear pack or a faulty tcm that is not commanding the shift solenoids correctly. i would drop the pan and inspect the fluid. if you notice any metal fragments on the bottom of the transmission pan, this will confirm gear failure. you will need to rebuild in this case.

Transmission does not want to shift up into a higher gear

I'd run a code check first, just to give you an idea if anything is leaving footprints in there. Transmission performance is somewhat related to engine performance but if you haven't serviced trans in a long time, do it.(if there is a lot of debris in there it may be time for a rebuild) Backfiring may be caused by an air leak in the exhaust manifold, allowing gasses in front of the cat to re-ignite. But, this could be caused by other things as well...that's why code read is important.

2000 Nissan Maxima sounds like its not shifting into 3rd gear

What do you mean by loud... Loud where??? If noise is from engine, make sure that the mechanical fan clutch is not "locked" (it's supposed to freewheel when cold... if it does not, it will "roar" when driving.
