2001 1500 4.3L did intake job cant get to start right

Installed dist.1st time long start time but did start after putting bad dragg on starter once started ran rough 2nd attempt while turning over hickuped in tail pipe and blow out smoke

Ok there is no way to physicaly time the engine with a light. you need to bring #1 cylinder to TDC then install dist. mark contact for ign wire #1 on cap outer as accurately as possible. then mark dist. base with same mark. allign rotor with mark and tighten clamp. assemble and fire make sure fireing order is right,cap is stamped on top. the exact way to set is with a scanner, cam(dist.) sensor and crank sensor need to bolth read #1 TDC at 0 degree advance and tighten clamp, computer takes over from there. be as accurate as possible, if done right it will run, if engine light flashes, your too far off try to bump a tick either way and have a tech set for you with a scanner. best of luck!

Why does my car make a clicking sound when trying to turn over?

the cause of no starts , in this case no cranks.
is best solved by testing, not guessing.
my 1st guess, is the car is A/T Oldsmoblies, don't have optional, stick shifts. so A/T it is.
that brings in the PRNDL switch on the side of the transmission.
only autos have that part.

when i see the starter only click , and it fails to JUMPER cable starting? does it>?
I hot wire the starter, 1st. i do that 1st test to be sure the starter
really works , say , bingo it does. crank now.?
does it?

if this happens, that means the KEY line is dead.! 100% fact.
so i check the voltage at the PRNDL (input and output)
and i gbet 0v not 12v, on the output of PRNDL, that means it's bad.
but wait?
but if the input to the PRNDL is dead that means the key switch is dead. hummmm, 2 tests, here, and answsers.
all with a $10 walfart volt meter, any meter made, in 100 years.
did you wiggle both swtiches , while cranking?
did you try to start car in neutral , which uses fresh virgin
contacts in the PRNDL.>?

Hack jobs, happen:
the key line on some cars , have been hacked,
for aftermarket alarms.?
or remote start bs.?
for other odd reasons, so when looking at the Key line
wires, look of hack jobs. (damage, non stock mods)

recap. (always first) (jumper cables tests failed)
  1. Can you turn the engine over by hand?
  2. Can the starter be hot wired. (it wont start , just cranks)?

if yes, and yes, , then the key line is bad.

i bet i just cut the problem in half,

Could be several things .... Do you have a distributor ... Have you ever changed it? There is a pickup coil on it that goes bad tale off dist. Cap and look to see if it has cracks or is broken .... Easier to just buy whole distributor (2) fuel pump try starter fluid to see if it will start by spraying a little in intake...

put number 1 cylinder at top dead center and drop in distributor so the rotor points to number 1 on cap. may have to try several times as gear moves when lowering dist.

I want to know where the starter is located in a cadillac deville dhs, 2001 car.

the starter is under the intake manafold, you will need to remove the intake to replace the starter the book time is 3 hours and that is for a shop who has all the proper tools, you should allow your self thehole weekend to do the job but once the intake is off it only takes about 10 min. to change the stater but removing and instaling the intake is a hole nother story.

I took my distributor out to replace the heads forgot to mark it. I reinstalled engine was hard to start but would start but rough I took dist. out thinking I was 180 out reinstalled turned over great but...

What you need to do is take the distributor out and by hand turn the engine so that Cylinder #1 is at TDC on the Ignition cycle. YOu can determine this by watching the valve rockers. Once the Exhaust valve has opened and closed, the intake valve should open and close. At that point watch the crank balancer for the "timing" marks to line up. Then install the distributor with the cap OFF, watching the rotor. It will rotate as you lower the distributor so you will have to rotate the dist shaft the right amount before you try to put it in so the rotor will point to #1 on the cap when it is all the way in.

I have a 99 Jimmy with 4.3 engine. I have bad missing in the engine. I have replaced all wires, plugs, cap and rotor. This unit is still missing and setting a general misfire code. I have no vacuum leaks...

I found the problem and 99 jimmy is running great now. the major problem was the intake manifold gaskets sucking air and causing random misfire codes(bad fuel/air ratio) but also we pulled the distributor as well because from 87-99 the drive gear was made of soft material and sure enough 3 teeth on the dist gear were almost worn right off. We also replaced this with 120$ new rebuilt unit.
Intake gasket kit is approx 100$ and no more than 2 hrs labour and the distributer is real easy to pull and replace once the intakes are off so this is a good time to check dist with little extra labour.

2000 Toyota Tundra starts occassionally. Sometimes starts right a way, sometimes have to turn the ignition key several times before it will fire. Battery good, all terminals cleaned. What should I check.?

Welcome to FixYa! You need to replace the starter solenoid contacts, or the starter itself.

Note that the starter is UNDER the intake manifold. This is a VERY difficult job, and is not recommended to those who do not have sufficient automotive experience.

If you DO remove the intake, you MUST replace the intake manifold gaskets, or your engine will not run properly, due to air leaks at the intake mating surfaces.

We have 2 problems 1st is a 1985 Yota 4runner that we replaced the rear seal on and after putting everything back together we can not get the timing adjusted so that it runs smooth. The distibuter is...

first problem you replced the rear main seal? was the timing belt installed correctly, from what gather is that you the dist cranked back as far as possably, i would check timing marks make sure they are right if they are check to make sure dist was installed on no#1 cyclinder at tdc on commpession stroke good luck and let me know how it gose kdc744
