Question about 2004 Ford Expedition

My traction control is slowing my expedition to a near stop on dry pavement after I replaced my front left bearing assembly. The speed sensor is plugged in as it should be. Could this be a faulty speed sensor in the new bearing? The traction control was working properly before the bearing was replaced.

Take the part back it should have 3 yr free replacement i have seen sensors bad on new hub assembly

My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer anti lock breaks system is kicking in on dry pavement when slowing down to stop? The break peddle is pulsating upon stopping?


Usually a front speed sensor/wheel hub going bad. is there a humming noise from the front end area while driving at highway speeds? If there is, try to isolate which side it is, and have that hub bearing replaced and make darn sure the axle nut is torqued to the proper spec, or it will fail. To many auto techs just tighten them up withan impact gun, and say its good.

Why does my 4 wheel drive not work all the time?

not work, do tell what makes you think it dont work (a lamp) or tires slipping or dead tires. (by tires mean that and traction)??????????

what mode fails, of the many, and where.???????



first off, we dont know what your tires are touching.

on road, or off road. pavement or ICE or snow.

that matters big time . (you read manual and match MODE to Road)

In 4A mode the center differential is electronically-controlled and rear drive wheel bias. The on-board computer monitors for any sign of rear drive wheel slip (loss of traction)

If loss of traction is detected, the center differential is told to send a share of the engine\'s torque to the front drive wheels. It will not let the front driveshaft turn at the same speed as the rear driveshaft.



What about traction management?

1997-2002 model Ford Expeditions offered an optional limited-slip rear differential (LSD). A conventional open rear differential was standard along with the conventional open front differential and the electronic locking center differential.

comment with out LSD, one tire can spin, on say ice.

You have a wheel speed sensor that is not working correctly. The ABS computer is losing the signal from the wheel speed sensor and interprets this as a wheel locking up, so it is going into antilock mode. When it does this on dry pavement when it is obvious that there is no wheel actually locking up it is called "false Antilock Mode" or "Overactive Antilock Mode". This is a pretty common problem on several vehicles.

The system on your Blazer uses wheel speed sensors which are an integral part of the front wheel bearing and hub assembly to determine wheel speed for the front wheels. It uses the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to determine rear wheel lock-up. The VSS data is shared between the Body Control Module (BCM), the Vehicle Control Module (VCM), The Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) and the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM - AKA "Antilock Module").
The problem is MOST LIKELY being caused by a front wheel bearing being loose (pretty common) which will require replacement of the front wheel bearing and hub assembly. However, it can also be caused by the VSS or a breakdown in communication between any of the modules that share the VSS data.

If you have either of the front wheel bearings making noise (growling or whining) then that is almost positively the cause of your problem. However, if it cannot be determined this way, the computer network will need to be scanned to find out which it is.

The symptoms you are describing sound like the brake system is going into antilock mode. If you are driving under wet or slick conditions, this is normal operation and it may not "feel" like it to you, but you are actually stopping in the shortest distance possible for the conditions.

On the other hand...If it is doing this on dry pavement and you are not driving like a maniac, this would be what is commonly called "FALSE antilock mode". This happens when the antilock brake computer "thinks" that one of the wheels is locking up when it is very apparent to the vehicle operator that there is no way a wheel should be locking up or skidding. This ia almost always caused by a weak or defective wheel speed sensor.

I have had a couple of cases on Ford trucks where the front wheel bearings had been changed with aftermarket bearing assemblies and this is when problem either started, or got worse. Upon inspection of the vehicle I found that these new bearing assemblies came with a new wheel speed sensor already installed. For some reason, the manufacturer installed the sensor with a spacer under it??? (like a metal gasket) Removing the sensor and discarding the spacer fixed the vehicles.

The speed sensors are built right into the wheel bearings of your vehicle, at the front and rear locations. They work both with the anti-lock brakes and with the traction control systems on the vehicle.

Removal & Installation
Front
The front wheel speed sensor is part of the hub/bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Hub and Bearing Replacement in Front Suspension for service procedures.
Rear
The rear wheel speed sensor is part of the hub/bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Hub and Bearing Replacement in Rear Suspension for service procedures.

Traction Control Light comes on frequently on dry pavement


Dead ringer sypmtom of a bad wheel speed sensor which is buried inside the wheel bearing. Very common on these cars.

TRACTION CONTROL.


that is what it is desgined to do - reduce acceleration and apply the brakes intermittently when the wheels spin. You have a switch you cn push to disable it. You need to disable each time you start car. See owner manual.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Traction Control System The optional traction control system is designed to control wheel spin when accelerating on slippery or loose surfaces. Traction control system is available only with anti-lock brakes. The traction control system includes the following components:
  • Hydraulic control unit.
  • Throttle control actuator (9N825).
  • Traction control switch.
  • Traction control warning indicator.
  • Front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204).
  • Rear brake anti-lock sensor (2C190).
The traction control system operates as follows:
  • System functions by transferring torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most traction.
  • This is achieved by applying the brake at the spinning wheel through the hydraulic control unit or reducing the throttle opening.
  • Traction control braking and throttle control occur at vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h (30 mph).
  • At vehicle speeds above 50 km/h (30 mph), only throttle limiting control is used.
  • If speed control is operating when traction control system engages the traction control system will disengage speed control through the use of a speed control relay. This action is the same as applying the brake pedal with speed control engaged.

Buick rendevousz headaches


I own the 2002 Buick Rendezvous CX and I've encountered the same problems listed here. The ABS / Traction Control Lamp stays on and was throwing a code for the left wheel speed sensor as well as an anti-lock brake code (both in the wheel bearing hub assembly). I replaced the left and right front wheel hub assembly yet this did not eliminate the abs codes. 
Ultimately, I traced this problem to a break in the wire that leads to the left hub assembly. Although the sensor was properly connected, the wire (which is encased in a plastic housing) was broken. This is the wiring which leads from the abs wiring harness under the hood down to the left wheel abs sensor. 
I would suggest that you simply remove the left wheel and inspect the wire that leads to the abs sensor (there is only one wire on each wheel). Mine literally fell apart when I removed the plastic housing around the wire. I spliced the wire together and put it back in the plastic housing. After this, my abs codes disappeared and my anti-lock brakes began working again!
This is a simple fix that many people spend $1000 + on by replacing the hub assembly which does not fix the problem.
