Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Vehicle cranks for 4 to 5 seconds (cold) before starting
Seems to be getting progressively worse
Runs excellent after starting
Starts right up when warm
Original plugs, wires, battery
New air filter, fluids changed
Burns 1 quart every 1500 miles
garaged, well taken care of, not driven hard
I am going to replace the plugs and wires, but is there anything else I should be considering?
Is there something I should do prior to the plugs?
I was wondering about carbon build up - do you recommend I use the "Top End" cleaner first?
GM did the top end clean about 30k miles due to piston slap noise that they said was caused by carbon buildup. It eventually came back. I switched to a non-synthetic oil about 10k miles ago to 10W-30 and the piston slap went away.
If it`s burning some oil it probably needs new valve seats in the heads and it probably isnt piston slap noise but the rockers getting looser. If you have the heads redone make sure the push rods are cleaned and not damaged I`m sorry to say but that slap going away will only be temperary as it continues to where on the valve seats it will start again you did the right thing though by switching motor oil if you do make these repairs you might want to add something like prolong or slick 50 well hope this helped
