Question about 2002 Subaru Outback

2002 Bean 3.0 Outback Legacy will not start after run and stop...

Okay-My 2002 auto, new battery, hi miles (200K-so what?) will sometimes not restart after a brief stop to, say, go into a store. Wiggling the shift lever makes clicking noises at the ignition switch. Can hear under hood clicks like solenoid trying to engage. Then, if I use the fob and lock and unlock the doors it sometimes starts. Most time is wait about 14-15 minutes and it will restart.

Had a VW bus that needed a whack with a ball-peen hammer when the engine comp got hot--but the Subaru doesn't get terribly hot when this occurs. Is this a security time-out facet of some kind?

TRY CHECKING THE TERMINAL CABLES ON THE BATTERY SEE IF THEY ARE LOOSE OR NEED A GOOD CLEANING OR CHECK FOR ANY LOOSE FUSES AT THE FUSE BOX OR ANY CORROSION ON THE END OF FUSES.

I have the same problem --random won't start (started just over a year ago) 1996 Subaru Outback with 156,000 -- generally while doing errands and more than one start/stop. Battery is fine as windows work, etc. Will not shift out of park so override and shift to neutral, back to park etc. Often starts in neutral but generally 5 - 15 minutes of trying. Mechanic now thinks it might be the starter. Any thoughts? I would really love to fix this. Not a solution but curious if anyone thinks it might be the starter.

Died on freeway and would not restart ? When you turned the key what happened ? Did the starter engage and spin the engine ? Or nothing happened . Why did you charge the battery ? Did you drain it trying to start it or it drained when driving the vehicle an it killed it ? Before replacing parts did you have it diagnosed or did you just replace parts ?

MPH hour gauge not working. 99 subaru legacy outback

the speedometer/odometer problem sounds like the vehicle speed sensor, which is ususally found on your front wheels, the stalling out sounds like an unrelated problem, but i couldnt tell you where to start for that one

1997 subaru, starter would not engage when hot,

You need to make sure that the grounds for the body and motor are good. Sometimes just turning the bolt will clean them up but better to remove, clean and replace. Also make sure battery terminals and wires are clean and secure. Hope this helps and have a great day.

97 outback legacy; won't start

not sure if this will help, but I recently changed the engine in my subaru and changed battery + starter also. Would start but then not restart once warmed up. Turns out the engine ground got forgotten, had that hooked back up after banging my head on a wall for a week and it runs like new

Starter or solenoid issue on '98 Subaru Outback Legacy

The starter is separate from the soleniod; It could be a part called the bendix on the starter itself. If you can remove it, take it to a auto parts store- they will check it for free.

Subaru Outback Legacy Flashing
Q. I have a 1996 Subaru Outback Legacy AWD manual transmission. the hazards flash when I turn the car off. I tried to reset the system by pushing the little black button under the drivers' side dash but it won't reset the system. I had problems with the brakes so I did not drive it for about two months and when I tried to start the car the battery was dead.
mechanic.jpg Now the brakes are fixed but the hazards won't quit flashing and the guy who repaired the car said I needed to reset the system by pushing the little black button. And I don't know if I should have it looked at, or change the battery, or if it is something very simple I can fix by my self.
Thank you very much,
Patrick
A. Patrick, you are the third person in the last two days that has come to me with this same exact problem under the same conditions. As of now I don't have any concrete information on this, but I believe the problem to be in the alarm system.
I believe the battery being disconnected or dying does something to the Anti-theft and Alarm System module and having a Subaru dealer reset the system will correct it.
If you do this and it works, please, let me know and I will pass the information on to the others.

Dear Mr. Ciulla,
I read your Q&A titled "Subaru Outback Legacy Flashing". I recently had the same problem on my 1996 2.5 liter Subaru Legacy Outback and your response is correct but I can give you a little more detail on what worked for me to stop the light flashing (which occurs sometimes if the battery had been dead):
There is a black reset button under the I/P near the anti-theft module.
  1. Turn ignition on
  2. Hold button 20+ seconds (door locks will lock/unlock 3 times)
  3. Turn ignition off
This also resets the key FOB so as step 2.5 you should also press the "lock" button on the key FOB before releasing the black reset button (door locks will lock/unlock one more time--do this with each key FOB you own). That's all!
The questioner in your Q&A said he tried the reset button; I suspect he either didn't turn the ignition on/off or didn't hold it in for over 20 seconds.
PS... pulling the door lock fuse will stop it temporarily if you can't get the above to work and have to take it to the dealer
Regards,
John

1999 Acura TL Problem

The problem is the ignition wiring harness, as described in the May 2002 Recall 02V120000. I tried to get Acura to replace it a second time (first time they replaced it was at 75K miles) with no success. Car started stalling/restarting again at 200K miles. I bought the part mentioned in the recall (~$70) and installed it myself - have not had a reoccurrence since.
