Open Question

I need a vacuum hose diagram for a 1986 subaru wagon 1.8 liter. Autamatic tranny and air conditioning. Some body chopped and plugged a bunch of hoses.

Hesitation while accelerating


The automatic tranny relies on vacuum pressure from intake manifold to signal when to shift. As the engine RPM increases, there's a proportional increase in intake manifold vacuum pressure. When vacuum pressure reaches a certain point, that signals the tranny to shift up to the next gear. When this vacuum hose has a crack or loose connection, it sends the wrong signal as to when to shift because vacuum pressure is dropping as air enters through the leak source, which the tranny interprets as a need to shift down to a lower gear. Replace all the vacuum hoses and see if this solves the problem. Look at the tranny and identify any air hose connected to it. These are vacuum hoses that you should replace, which usually there's only 1 or two connected to the air intake manifold.

Again I wasn't sure of what vacuum diagram you needed as the is vacuum for emissions, air conditioning and cruise control. the picture above is for emissions for the 3.8 liter engine. Hope this was what you were needing but if you have a different engine (305 or the 3.8 turbo) you can reply back here with what diagram you needed or the correct engine. Hope this helps...

Your vehicle has four oxygen sensors. There is a vacuum line underneath the throttle body that regularly fails, causing the lean condition, and the whistling and surging. Very dificult to see, but with the engine running usually you can fine the vacuum leak with your fingers. Hose is non-reinforced rubber, and is shaped in a 90 degree bend. If memory serves me right, it is the pcv hose. Replace this and your problems will cease.

I have a 1986 300 GD Mercedes wagon with a 617 ,5cly diesel none turbo.Its injection pump has only one vacuum line to it for a kill switch. Now I bought a 1978 300TD for the 5 cyl diesel to put in my wagon...

find the EGR valve, then follow the vacuum hose to the solenoid.

My chk engine light came on and i went to autozone and they put it on there diagnostic machine and it came up to the code p0708 definition: my transmission range switch open circuit condition probable...


your vehicle is driving good, not slipping etc... because what i can see from what im reading you have an electrical problem with the transmission wiring.. check the plugs that plug in the transmission, and follow them, im sure you will find something skint up somewhere.

I have a 1986 checy 4x4 , plugs replaced, fuel filter air filter...Idle is really high and now after i let off the gas pedal is still goes around 80 km's, and will not slow???


If this is a 4.3 liter V-6, they are notorious for throttle body to intake manifold gasket air leaks.
You can use a long piece of heater hose or air hose to find the vacuum leak. Place one end of the hose to your ear and use the other end to search for the leak. Move the hose over the engine while engine is running and listen for a "hissing" sound.
Repair the leak, disconnect the negative battery cable for 3 to 5 minutes, start the vehicle and drive or 45 mph for 5+ miles. The IAC will relearn and the idle should return to normal.
