Are you sure this isn't the electric fuel pump humming? wheel bearings don't hum they growl, the same is true of rear diff bearing problems, gear noise is a loud whining noise, so if you are accurate about this being a humming noise then it may come from the fuel pump, the only other thing would be the transfer case fro the all wheel drive is noisy, it could create a noise like you describe as well.

ok does noise change when turning left or right if not its not a wheel bearing next try putting in neutral at 55 does noise change what you are looking for these is pinion and carrier bearings in differential the noise can be coming from several places have you checked all your fluid levels front and rear diffs and transfer case also check fluid condition also check for metal in fluids if you stick finger or paper towel in and if you see metal you will know where your noise is coming from

I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer and it is making a loud humming noise coming from the rear end. What could that be making the noise?

ok it could be two things. it could be rear wheel bearings or a rear diff. If its a high pitch wine then its worn gears in your differential. its needs serviced or replaced. If it more of a rumbling or grinding hum, coming only from one side or both) then there are bad wheel bearings.

2002 Subaru Forester. I have a humming/grinding

I would suspect wheel bearing first
Test just like the front
Wheel off the ground
grab the top and bottom of the tire and rock

However...If I remeber correctly the rear uses axle bearings which are pressed on and difficult to diangose

Therefore... I'd advise you seek a Subau dealer since so few tech see a Forester even once a month

Hello,
Noise can be also from some sticky brake pad, or the bearings of the rear wheels, or even some spoiler, but you should have noticed it right after installing, and it is another sound. As for the differential, there might be a broken tooth, or again bearings, regardless of oil state.

Have 2000 forster with rear humming noise. Both wheel bearings are new stil r/r diff same problem.

check to see if rear tires are not cupping ,uneven tire wear in rear causes a very similar noiselike rear bearings,if ok sounds like another bad bearing possibly caused by poor installation i see this alot, also check to see if brackets that attach rear diff crossmember to body are not bent upwards hitting crossmember, thewse brackets are in front of the rear wheels

Noise in the rear end. Sounds like constant road noise (hummm)

Possible wheel bearing. Check tire pressures as well.

How to remove the rear differential on a 2001 Subaru Forester?

I had a somewhat similar problem: I would hear scratching noise from the rear of the car whenerver I turn. I (reasonably) thought it was the differential and brought the car to the mechanic with this in mind. But it turned out to be a protective cover of one of the rear breaking discs that was bent by an impact. When I was turning the wheel would very slightly bend off the axis and the disc would scratch against the cover. So, it's not always the differential. BTW: I have Forester '03
