YOUR ENGINE IS OVERHEATING POSSIBLE CAUSE THE THERMOSTAT STICKING CLOSE. ALSO CHECK ANTIFREEZE LEVEL. MAKE SURE ITS NOT LOW.MAKE THE RADIATOR CORE AND GRILLE NOT RESTRICTED.NOT ALLOWING AIR FLOW.

This Could Be a NUMBER or Things.
1 Thermostat Sticking CLOSED.
2. Coolant Level LOW
3. LEAK in COOLING SYSTEM
4. If you have a 2 FAN System 1 Could Be Faulty
5. CLOGED / CORRODED INSIDE of RADIATOR
6. Radiator Dirty In the FRONT of it Restricting AIRFLOW

2000 s type 4.0 engine overheating

This can be cause by a few things, the first thing to check would be with a cold engine open coolant cap, this may be on the radiator or the plastic bottle, make sure cooling system is full.

the next thing is to see if the fans come on when temp start to go past 3/4 on temp or if digital at 220.

the rest would need a shop to check. a bad coolant temp sensor or fan relay/module and last thermostat.

It is normal for your fan to continue to run for approximately 10mins AFTER shut off your engine. If it run's for longer than that or it drain's your battery, then you have a problem.

unfortunately if the motor is locked down you are looking at either a replacement engine or an engine overhaul. as far as what could have caused it the list is a long one water mixing with oil, engine overheating, bent connecting rod, etc. i sorry but there is no way to sugar coat this issue. i hope this helps good luck

My 2001 dodge durango is overheating an leaking coolant from a round plug type thing in the corner on the passenger side near the windshield

What exactly is the "round plug type thing" near the firewall [passenger side]? Is it a sensor of some type? I, too, have a coolant leak here on my 2001 Durango; its tucked in rather tightly near the hood/firewall corner. My electric fan is not kicking on; vehicle overheated tonight. (4.7 liter)
