Hi,
Is the "something" sprayed, engine coolant? The belts drive everything; power steering, air conditioner compressors, overhead cams... and water pumps. Check to see if your water pump failed. Sorry to say, the vehicle will be disabled until the fault is repaired and a new belt put on.
Good luck...

The center pully is the IDLER PULLEY.
It is also referred to as the TENSIONER.

It has a coiled spring that creates the belt tension. Replace it ($15) (and the belt) ($8).

Hope this helps!

Trying to find a serpentine belt size with out Ac for a 1997jeep grand cherokee laredo. V8, 5.2L

You're not going to find a serpentine belt for that truck without AC because it didn't exist. They all had AC standard, which means, whether or not you RUN an AC system the compressor has to remain installed since the pulley was part of the serpentine routing.

Hi i have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo do i turn the screw counter clockwise on the tensioner pulley to remove

The opposite direction the pulley turns. However, if you are trying to get the serpentine belt on or off, this will help. It's easy and doesn't require a prybar.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

Drive belt is loose on 6 cylinder 96 jeep. How do I adjust it?

You will Probably need a New Belt Tensioner. Draw a Diagram of the Belt Routing Before Removal of the Belt. You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Remove the Belt. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!
