Sure you can run without the converter... It may trigger your engine light to go on. Also, you're increasing your emissions and it's against Federal law to remove emission control equipment. If you're caught, the fine can be a hefty one. Also, your car won't pass an E-Test and at that point, they'll know the converter has been tampered with.

A converter will cost you $150 to $300 on average. Go with Bosal if you don't want to spend a lot of money

How do I repair an emissions exhaust leak after the turbo and before the catalytic converter?

There is no catalytic converter in a 2001 VW TDi.

If it is just an exhaust leak take it to a muffler shop like Midas, it is surprisingly cheap, like 50$. Exhaust isn't really a DIY thing unless you know how to weld. In which case, find the hole weld a patch on it.

The catalytic converter probably is failing. If you can pass inspection without it, you can save a lot of money by having it bypassed.

Could someone tell me what the error codes P0141 P0036 on a 2003 Jetta means? thx

The error codes you have are for the O2 Sensors. There is one before and after the catalytic converter. It is usually the first O2 sensor that is the problem because the second sensor is used just to verify the converter is working. The O2 sensors are usually $60 to $130 dollars depending on the type your vehicle uses. they are located on the downpipe on the exhaust system and the other is locted after the catalytic converter on the exhaust system. The O2 sensor not working will cause you gas mileage to be reduced because the car's computer will run the fuel mixter rich.

Yeah this could definitely be the fuel filter, change it yourself and save the cash, it's pretty easy, although you may spill some fuel.

I have a 2002 volkswagon passat all wheel drive, 6 cylinder engine. The cost of a catalytic converters are very high. I need it for both the right and left front. I bought the car used. Is it a government thing that because it is a emission thing and my car is a 2002 do I have to pay to have this fixed?
