Question about 1992 Chevrolet K1500

1 Answer

How can I release the latch for my hood through the grill at the front of my truck? Issue: Hood Release/Cable on my 1992 Chevy K1500 appears to be disconnected as there's no tension on the pull handle on the inside of the truck. I can see a "tension spring" inside but one end isn't connected to anything and I can't see where it should attach. So, now I'm trying to access a hook/latch that I see through the grill, but I pulled this hook towards met at the front of the truck and no luck. I'm not sure if it's the actual hood latch or not. I can't see other obvious options. I would love some help, if avaiable. :)

Thank you very much for the reply. How can I easily identify the "latch pin" to begin to unscrew? Is it in the center of the truck in front of the radiator? On the driver's side? Does it face down towards the ground (vertically) or is it horizontal? Is it unique in appearance, or does it look like any other screw/bolt? Will it be obvious to the naked eye?

I looked up from under the truck near the bumper, but am not I'm seeing any obvious options.

    Thanks, again.

Theres the arm that the cable hooks to and it moves to the drivers side not front and back. Looking up from under the truck in front of the raditors you can unscrew the latch pin with a long screwdriver its very tight and is hard to get started. once unscrewed the hood will open against the safty latch and then can be opened. Many auto parts stores will have the new cable. If you can't get it lose to open the hood and the truck runs OK most body shops can get it open and install the new cable too. As this is a common job on a crashed car.

The end of the plumger pin is usally right dead center and doestnt have to be seen from the bottom its a point almost and it has a screwdriver slot in it just in case this happenes. You may also be able to reach thought the grill and remove the bolts the hold the latch onto the upper raditior support with the bolts out you will be able to open the hood a little more so you may be able to unscrew the pin or trip the latch. Remember trying to trip the latch may require you to pust the hood closed some to relieve the pressure so the hood will (pop) easier.

Hood cable broke or came loose on 1992 coupe deville cant get hood up

You'll have to try going thru the grille or from under the bumper to access the hood latch.
You might want to look at another GM product to gauge were the latch is in your car.
Sometimes you can use a coat hanger as a hook to pull the latch from outside the grille or between the grille and hood. Or use a long screwdriver from under the bumper.

96 chevy s10 hood release cable broke need to open hood

On my 2002 s10 the small clip on the hood latch where the cable end attaches to the lever was broken.I finally drove a 3/4" mop handle and by prying, forced the grill down enough to unbolt the hood latch and after messing with it for a while I was able to reach behind the latch and press on it enough to drop the latch off the pin.Sure hope I don't ever have to do it again.

use a coat hanger and go through grill and hook the hood latch. you can also lay under front of car with a few extensions and a rachet, and take out the bolts that hold hood latch. if both fail. remove grill if possible to get to hood latch. good luck !!

Hood will not release on my 1994 Chevy Silverado 1500. Is there an alternative way to get the hood up when the hood release is not working?

Using a coat hanger, it's possible to go through the grill and hook the cable used to release the hood. Chances are the cable is either worn or it's not properly seated in the latch. Pulling on the cable with a coat hanger will often release the latch.

Hi Gillespi,

The hood release cable on my cherokee slipped out of its mount on the latch a while ago. Here's how I got the hood open to fix it.

You're going to need a set of long needlenose pliers and a flashlight.

Get in front of the car and shine the light through the grill. You're looking for the release cable where it attaches to the hood latch.

There will be an anchor point for the outer sleeve where the cable itself is exposed. Grab the cable with the needlenose and pull out and to the right. You'll be surprised at how easily it clicks open.

Best regards,
Mike

No hood release cable Chevy S10 truck

I have this same problem. You have to take a screw-driver (philips) and look between the hood and the grill and you will see the hood latch assembly. There will be a large gauge wire with a loop about the size of a large philips head screw-driver. This is the release. Take the screw-driver and push the wire towards the drivers side door and it will release.

2000 Chevy Blazer with Broken Hood Release. How do I open the hood

can you reach the cable itself?,or is it broke at the hood latch?IF its not broken at the outside latch, try to follow the cable,un-hook it from the handle and pull on the wire cable to open it.IF its broken at the latch itself, you are going to have to reach the latch through the grille and try to pull the lever the cable connects to.That part is no fun at all..!!

Hood release is broken...need to open hood

A hood release works with a cable that pulls the latch open. if you have a long flat head screw-driver you can try to spring the latch itself through the front grill.

Opening hood on 1992 Ford Explorer

I had the same problem with my hood. I had that handy wire hanging out of the front but it didn't want to release the hood. The cable was jammed and the hood had to be manually released via ratchet. After you can get the hood open maneuver the cable under the plastic piece where the hood meets the grill to stop this from happening again.

Hood latch

There is no other way to release the hood other than either trying to reach the latch release from under the car or removing the grille.
