Check Engine Light!

My check engine light just came on on the way to work. I have had a catylic convertor problem that has not been fixed yet. The honeycombs are broken and rattling around. I have been driving my suv like that for a few months. Is it possible that the catylic convertor can cause the engine light to suddenly come on? I have a 2003 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with only 71,000kms on it??? Please help..thanks! Cindy

Yes your cat will cause it to come on...
There is a sensor before the cat that measures the emissions from your headers, then there's another sensor after your cat that measures the emissions after it passes through your cat. a faulty cat will cause the sensor to register differently triggering the light. Driving with a broken cat can cause serious damage to your engine as it also alters the backpressure

A bad cat. will definitely send a trouble code and make your light turn on. its odd though that the light didnt come on sooner. either way, you should replace the catalytic converter. even though it doesnt pose a risk to your engine, it will raise the emissions levels a lot. about the check engine light, the best way to go about checking that is to have somebody with a scanner check your truck. there could also be other trouble codes present. most major automotive stores will scan the truck for you free of charge, and it only takes a couple of minutes to do.they should also explain to you the possible causes of any other codes that may be present.

The check engine light comes on when the computer has identified a fault in one of the car's systems. The answer is yes. The computer is monitoring the emissions system and a bad cat converter will cause the light to come on. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Yes. It can cause the Check Engine light to come on.
What codes come on? There is a few.... I'm not sure of them all but, 2 that i know are P0420 and P0430 .. or so i think :P

I have had this problem before allthough i just removed the Cat all around.

The converter's only purpose is to reduce emissions from the engine, in rare cases the converter can disintegrate which could result in a loss of power but this is not very common

you can jump across the plug to get the light to go off but its best to install a converter.the car was designed to run at peak with the specified exhaust system.good luck.

My check engine light came on (blinking) I know that I am behind in oil changes, and I checked my oil, it is low. Will this cause the light to blink?

Your check engine light---indicates a possible system failure, nothing to do with oil
You have it checked for codes, diagnose the issue and repair

Your oil should never be low.
If you go as much as 5000 miles on an oil change and really drive it hard, you may loose a 1/2 qt in 5,000 miles

2002Honda civic ex jerks and hesitates when not accelerating

I would have the catylic convertor checked.
Then have the transmission check . I am guessing the transmission is automatic. The torque convertor could be shuttering when slowing down to a stop.

I have problem with my 1995 dodge ram when I drive more then 4 hrs it starts chaking and it slows down. It does not turns off but I cannot run it farter than 30mph after that.

I am assuming the engine maintenance has been kept up. The fuel filter changed and tune ups , oil change has been performed in accordance with the Owners Manual.
Does the check engine light come on?
Is the transmission fluid in good condition ?
If so, The catylic convertor could be the failure The cat is getting very hot and then starts to clog. The engine is not able to release the exhuast gas from the engine. The back pressure from the exhuast is choking the Comustion Chamber with poor air .
I would have the exhuast system checked.

Bogs down at high acceleration

Sounds like a plugged catylic convertor, GM has a Special Policy adjustment that covers the catylic convertors for 10 years or 120,000 miles (190,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. This is for 2001-2002 models with 3.4L or 3.8L engines. If you have a 3.8L engine you want to get this fixed soon, I have seen people drive these things so long with the convertor plugged that they melt a hole in the plastic intake plenum where the EGR port comes into the intake behind the throttle body.
