Legal-racer: It's at the dealership again. The first time around the battery would not hold a good charge after about 15 months, they replaced it and said that the system was charging correctly. Second time around that new Toyota 60 month battery went dead recently in about 1 month or less. We brought it back they tested the charging system, it's working and tested the drain on the battery when the car is off and that passed w/in normal limits. So, it has everyone scratching their heads. The car was driven this week 2x and it died last night w/only about 2.084v reading on the battery from the posts or clamps. No lights, including trunk are on. If the parasitic test is passing then what in the world can it be?

No it does not shut off mid drive. If it sits for about 2 days, then the battery can go deadabd you can jump it, then the alt charges it up to about 13.0-14.0v. So you know the alt is working. The dealership just put a new battery in it today after extensive testing on the charging system and low drain when car is off. Everything passed, but they still put a new battery in. So if the batter goes bad again we have a very odd issue and we'll probably buy a new car for my wife. We can't have this happening w/a newborn in the family.

Did you run a test on you're Alternator? When you turn the car back on that is suppose to Re juice you're battery, Or maybe something isn't turning off? Check all you're power sources while the car is off and see what still gets power, Uhmmm.... A volt tester :P On you're relays and fuses, Thoses are just some ideals. You kinda have to know what gets power and what doesn't... Good luck,

Does The car shut off mid drive? Could be a Wiring harness problem,
I think it's you're alternator though, That would be a good reason you're battery is dieing,

How do you get the car started again?

Have someone check the charging system on the truck. The light comes on when the alternator is not charging the battery.
Could be a wiring problem between the alternator and the battery.

1998 Toyota Avalon XLS -- Will not start. No clicking.

It definitely sounds like a weak battery issue. Ck your connections at the battery for cleanliness & tightness. U need to have the batt checked along w the charging system & ckd for electrical shorts. If no problem is found that is the starting line. It may be a prob in the ignition system etc. if the problem isn't found by here. Good Luck

First place I would look is the boot light . Is the switch properly adjusted to switch off the light when the boot is closed.. Remove the eart lead and put an ampmeter in the line and read the current draw . It will give some idea as to what may be still on

My 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS squeals loadly when I start the engine and the fan is on in the car. I turn of the fan and it stops. After driving I turn the fan back on and don't get the squeal anym

Almost certainly one or more of the drive belts (not the timing belt) on the engine needs an increase in tension. It may tell you about this in the owner's handbook.

If not you can either ask a mechanic to do this straightforward job for you, or try it yourself. You can download a zipped service manual from here

http://www.freeautorepairmanual.org/free-download-toyota-avalon-service-manual.html

and look these belts up in the charging section and steering section.

You going in the right direction, but you don't
have the experience or meter to test anything

So you go to a repair shop & have the battery
tested ,as well as the alternator & current draw

I have a 1995 Toyota Avalon XLS. Something keeps draining the battery!..the battery was new in July. If I take off the battery terminal when the car is not running..and then put it back on..the car...

So you have a parasitic power drain when the system is off. You can narrow the fault quite quickly if you have access to an ammeter (multimeter set to DC current). connect the ammeter in series between the battery negative terminal and its cable. Note the power consumption when everything is off. Remove and return each fuse in turn and each time note the current change. Check them all just to be thorough. There will be one circuit fuse that will be responsible for the majority of the current draw. It is this circuit that needs to be examined for a short or maybe a light being left on (glove compartment and trunk courtesy lights are the usual culprits). It maybe that you cannot spare the time immediately to resolve the issue so in the mean time leave this fuse out and reconnect the battery, which should now hold its charge. Good luck

Put a new battery in it and it ran for about 2 hours than battery light came on and car died,,now with the key just turned to on it makes a clicking sound in black fuse holder on finder

Sounds like you have a charging problem. It could be your altrenator or a loose connection somewhere. Take it to a local auto mecanic that can do a charging system test.

Camshaft position sensors can cause this to happen if the engine is warm or cold.
If it only happens when the engine is either warm or cold, you will want to look at things like the ignition system, and general state of tune. If the engine light is on, then you could have some clues there, pointing to another temperature sensor for the air or coolant.
