Question about 2001 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Both my headlights have gone in my Golf Mark 4. I assume it can't be the bulbs or the fuses since they are unlikely to go both at the same time. My friend say that it could be the switch in the actual cockpit that needs to be replaced. I tried to pull the part out myself last night so I could go to an auto shop and get a new one but it was difficult to get out. Please can you tell me if I am on the right track to fix this problem? Is it a common problem? Is there a nack for getting the switch out? Once I get the new part what advice can you give me for putting it in.

Well first of all it could very well be that both burned out at the same time. the more likely culprit is the headlight relay located in a fuse panel in the engine compartment. unfortunately i'm about 25,000 km away from home at the moment (australia) so i don't have my auto program with me. however if i remember right there are about four fuse panels in the engine compartment. look first near the battery for one. next is on the firewall on the passenger side. the rest i'm not sure of.

please take a moment to rate this solution thanks

Have you tested the turn signal switch is voltage leaving the turn signal switch? I would think it is the switch that is the problem assuming all the fuses related to the lights are ok and not blown out.

How fix 2009 Honda Fit lowbeam headlights that both stopped working at same time?

Agree that both shouldn't fail together.
I suggest change one anyway, never hurts to carry a spare.

No power to low beam headlights

If both lights do not work it is unlikely to be a fuse or even the bulbs, although that cannot be completely discounted. The more probable cause would be the headlight relay which has gone faulty or even the headlight switch which is not selecting the low beams. Fuses are easiest to check, and there is probably one for each light. Bulbs are a bit trickier and really need a continuity tester to check, or try other bulbs. (Remember not to touch the glass part of the bulb). The relay can only be checked by replacement and the switch can be checked by seeing if there is power at the low beam terminals when the switch is selected that way.

Gulf plus 1.9tdi n/s headlight wont work but its not the bulb

If bulb is ok, check fuses and relay related to each sides. IF both lights went aout at same time headlight switch/lever could be problematic and if it is, you need a new switch.

Both my main headlights went out. Is it the lights, a fuse, or electrical?

Hi-

How does the fuse look? If it is the fuse, then other items would be out as well.

If there is a relay, it may have gone out and you just have to replace it.

If the lights have gone out, you will know because the halogen bulb will be dark on the inside of the glass. These both may have gone out at he exact same time. Low Probability, but possible as the car is 4 years old.
Hope this helps.

Headlight Unit

The easiest way to go about this is to simply remove the headlight assembly. The first step is to remove the grill. Be very careful with the retaining clips as they are prone to breaking. Next, remove the three retaining screws, then remove the light assembly. you now have access to the bulb socket. Depress the release tab on the socket, and unplug from the bulb. Now simply rotate the bulb until in goes no further and remove the bulb. IMPORTANT!!!!!! Before you install the new bulb, clean it with alcohol!! DO NOT touch the bulb, as you will leave skin oil, creating a hot spot which will burn out the bulb. Reassembly is the reverse order.
