check for voltage at the battery with the engine running. You should see 14 plus volts. Now turn on the lights, bower motor, and whatever else you can to put the maximum draw on the battery. If the voltage drops below 13 volts the alternator is bad.

Hi, this can happen when the voltage drops too low. If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. It should be around 14 volts. If it is much less, remove the alternator and have it tested at your local parts chain. If the voltage is good, you may need a new instrument cluster. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

My alternator on my 06 chevy silverado 1500 seems to drop below 14v could there be a relay that needs to be replaced or do i need to change the alternator

If it runs way below 14 volts there is usually a problem, but if at an idle there is alot of amps being drawn in can drop under the 14 volts and be ok. If when drivng with rpms higher and volts stay under 14 volts you should have the alternator checked out. There is no relay for this. Everything that operates the alternator in contain in the alternator.

if you have a multi meter,
check voltage at battery with car running, should be at least 13-14 volts,
now turn on fan motor to high, flashers on,radio on, and check voltage at battery, regulator should have adjusted voltage to handle the load, should still be 13-14 volts,
now turn all that stuff off,and turn on headlights and recheck battery voltage,if below 13-14 volts replace regulator,if voltage is spiking higher than 14volts replace do not need other belts.
