Question about 2003 Dodge Durango

Have a squeaking, grinding noise in the front end. Can feel it threw the column and in the floor board. Comes and goes at different speeds. More pronoced after going threw dips. Thought it might be the viscous coupler, maybe even the driver side axle. It has a sqeak, grinding, and metalic growel. Checked the breaks, there good. It is an all wheel drive. Not sure what it is, doen't want to have to start throwing parts at it.

Brakes are over 70%. Does it when driving. Put it in nutral and coasted to see if it still did it and it does. It was an "all the sudden" problem too. I was thinking wheel bearing. It makes the noise when turning left or right. Not more pronounced when turning the wheel back and forth. Pretty consistant when it does it. And it is loud.

Thanks peoples! That was it. I think it had gotten so hot that when I tried to wiggle it last night it wouldn't move. I let it cool off, jacked it up again and it moved like a loose hula girl! Thanks again and have a great weekend!

What I'd do is get the front end in the air and feel for any play (or looseness in the wheels) with someone holding the steering wheel. This would indicate a worn wheel bearing. Usual suspect that one.

It sounds like a wheel bearing broke a ball or spacer. That would make noise all the time.

2005 stratus squeaks in front end over bumps and car shakes when slowing from speeds of 35mph and over

The noise would usually be the strut or the control arm bushings. The vibration could also be the component making the noise, or warped brake rotors.

Front end rubbing or grinding noise but goes away

It could be a number of things, but a common problem with this car is rusty pins in the front end.  This is louder when turning.  There was a bulletin issued about it.

Brakes hanging up or axle is going out. CV boot is probably torn and you are hearing bearings crashing around. Check before it goes out or you may end up crashing and stranded

Grinding noise driver side front at low speed . have changed hub assembly goes away for a little while then comes back . can spin the hub and dont feel like bearing is bad. really getting to me

Did you recently swap tires from back to front. I had very annoying wheel bearing type noise and the tires were not noticeably worn (Bridgestones) but apparently some wear pattern was causing my noise. Swapped them back.

C V Joints can make a lot of noises. Sounds to me like you either bent the inner fender or if it is plastic you may have pulled it loose and it looks normal but it is just sitting in place with the push pins out of their intended holes. When you turn and or hit a high speed it hits the wheel/tire. Try putting on some gloves and then pulling medium strength on the fender well and surrounding areas to see if that is the problem -

Squeak and slight vibration heard and felt in steering column at low speeds (Parking lots, etc)

Get a friend to turn wheel back and forth in the garage, get on the ground and use your hands to feel where the noise is coming from. Metal gives off a significant amount of vibrations with noise. Should be easy to tell where it's coming from. Could be your rack and pinion, however I would be much more willing to consider ball joints. Hard to tell without getting "down and dirty" on the floor under the vehicle feeling for the noise.

Could be your steering gearbox, tierod end, rack and pinion piston, low power steering fluid, bad serp belt, ball joints, front struts/mounting hardware.

Also test steering with the entire vehicle on the floor and with the front end off the ground lifted by a few floor jacks lifting on the frame of the vehicle.

Ball joints especially on Ford vehicles tend to squeak after a while (mostly since they are the sealed type) even if they pass a safety inspection.

Vibration in steering column

if your vibration comes and goes with different speeds, most likely problem is balance in tires/wheels. a bent wheel often vibrates more with higher speeds. if the vibration is stong in the steering wheel, the problem is normally in the front end, if you feel in more in the seat or body of the car then look to the rear end.
