I have a 1996 chevy cavalier and it cuts out and once in awhile it smokes black smoke and seems to be using a lot of gas. The fuel pump is new and new spark plugs wires and oil change two days ago was doing this before oil change seems to be using 3/4 of a tank of gas to go 32 miles. Please help single mother needs answers

Do you know where the O2 sensor is located? I am about to blow this car up it has become very frustrating. Will this make it use lots of gas? Thanks for your help how much does one of these sensors cost

It sounds like your car is running rich, which means it's running with to much gas to run the engine. If there an Auto Zone in your area, have then scan the car for any codes which should explain why the car is running rich. Auto Zone scan free of charge and hope there is a code in the history that can explain why it's running rich. The most common cause is a faulty O2 sensor or a dirty MAF sensor which can be cleaned with MAF cleaner that you can buy at Auto Zone and i am sure the guys there can help you determine the cause better then i can since i not there. Please keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon and save you some money. Good luck friend. Oh and the other thing to look out for too is have the guy's at Auto Zone locate your fuel pressure regulator and check to see that the vacuum tube has not fallen off or that there is no cracks in the vacuum line. Have them also check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve and bat an eye, it always works for the girl on me LOL. Good luck once again.

The car should have a stored trouble code take it to auto zone or advance auto and have them run a code check this will point you in the right direction, it sounds like an ignition module or some component in the ignition system is intermintently malfunctioning

Black smoke is usually extra fuel, but you say you are priming it to start so that could be why.
Have you checked fuel pump pressure before and after cranking ?

1998, gmc,K2500, 5.7l, 250,000km, starts good but idle is very rough and lots of black smoke, lots of power, runs good, but again, lots of black smoke. After you run the truck for awhile, idle is good, but...

A bad coolant temp sensor for the ECM will cause that problem ... they are cheap and easy to replace. One other possibility is a piece of carbon stuck in the EGR causing an internal vacuum leak ..
Good luck.

1996 chevy cavalier with a 2.2l engine and you have been getting lean system readings from the obd fuel pump is fine new fuel filter and fuel lines seem fine no leaks what could be the problem?

Check the condition of the O2 sensors in the exhaust system. If the car has a lot of miles, those sensors become worn and don't sense proper fuel mixture.

Black smoke coming from my 97 Toyota corolla

The black smoke is a sign of excessive gasoline not burning completely, there is a wide range of probabilities that may be causing this to happen my best advise would be to have it diagnosed with a scanner, otherwise you could spend a lot of money replacing "probable" malfunctioning parts till you find the one that was broken (eg: EGR valve, MAF, coils, injectors, etc.) good luck

1993 lumina euro is blowing black out of tailpipe smells gas

Black smoke is unburned gas. If the car is running fine besides the black smoke, it's most likely the Coolant Temperature Sensor. The part is roughly $20 and an easy fix.

PS- I'm guessing your check engine light is on...

Cavalier blowing out black smoke car idles fairly well considerin

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

Lots of black smoke comming out exhoust pipe

It sounds like your fuel pressure regulator is bad. It is located on the end of one of the fuel rails, it will have a vacum line hooked to it. Pull the vac line as soon as you shut it off, if there is gas in the vac line the diaphram is bad or it could be stuck open that is why you have black smoke and are using alot of fuel. You should be able to purchase for around $60.00

Runing too rich and black smoke

did you upgrade any of your fuel system components? if not you might want to at least check out the fuel sending unit and pump motor... you may be pumping the amount of fuel that the old engine wanted but your new engine doesn't quite want that much.. hope that helps

Black smoke

black smoke out of exhaust? if so, piston rings or maybe valve or vavle seats. For piston rings, motor needs to be rebuilt. For valves, neads a valve job. Either way, big money.
