It could be the TPS but more likely is the Idle Air Control Valve located just behind the throttle body.

I have a 2002 durango 4.7. I have a hard time starting it hot or cold.when i get it started it idles fine for a few minuts and then rpm drop and wants to stall out,The truck runs great wile driving but...

First off, how new is your battery and how many miles on the D? Dodge vehicles are very sensitive to a failing battery. Have it load tested, and if is the least bit flaky, replace it.

After that, the TPS or throttle postion sensor is your next.

As far as the revving up and down above 3000 rpm goes, that is the PCM protecting the engine from over revving.

Why would the engine not be reeving up when it is in park?

does everything work ok when driving ,or just won't rev up could be a bad cable to the carb linkage, or the main computer is not working properly

2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab is revving up while in Drive and Park?

Sounds like the mass airflow sensor and or the intake air temp sensor. If you can locate and repair these yourself, it will save tons of money for ya.
Hope this helps,

My 2000 Dodge Dakota wants to rev up all the time?

I had the same problem with my dakota SLT. I had to replace the idle sensor and once I did, it worked very well. When I took it to the dealership, they said it was an oxygen sensor, but after replacing both and having the problem, figured it out.
