Squealing noise when I turn on a/c button

I have a 2003, chevrolet impala and when I turn on the a/c button, I notice a squeaking noise that stops as soon as I turn the a/c button off. What is this? Someone suggested the A/C fans, somoeone else the compressor, someone else engine cooling fans and someone else a/c compressor clutch. Are these all the same thing, or all different things?

No, they are not all the same things, but they are all good suggestions. I am going to vote for the A/C clutch/compressor as my main candidate. The compressor is driven by the serpentine belt that drives all of the accesories on your motor. The A/C compressor only asks the engine for power when the A/C is on. When the A/C is off the pulley in front of the compressor is otherwise just spinning freely with no drag to the engine. When you turn the A/C on, it kicks in the electric clutch on your compressor, therefore making the sqeaking noise. It should also happen when you turn on the defrost. The squeaking noise is probably a bad clutch(not probable) or a bad compressor. Most of the time you can't buy the clutch seperate and will have to buy a new compressor. It's time to take it to the shop. Get a few quotes and take it to the Mechanic that you like the best. Also PLEASE rate my answer. If you didn't like my answer tell me, if you did tell me.

2003 Impala. Grinding noise when I back up and turn the wheels. Notice axle grease on the frame under the boot on both sides but more so on passenger side.

Replace CV joints, or half shafts. Half shafts are much easier, and the cost isn't that bad after you exchange the old ones.

Cause: The squeak or squeal noise may be caused by insufficient lubrication of the intermediate steering shaft-to rubberboot- contact area.
you may be able to get it warrantied through saturn. this is the TSB #

Squealing noise under the hood

No, The fan clutch will not make a Noise it will just not catch the Fan to Cool. It is the Belt. Make sure that it is Tight. You may have a Bad Belt Tensioner if it is not.
