My Grand Vitara can be switched between 2H, 4H, 4L & N. I just don't know what does the "N" mean? And what is the difference between this "N" and the "N of the gearbox?


N on the gearbox/transmission is Neutral for the transmission. Nuetral meaning that the power is not going anywhere so you are not going to move anywhere. The N next to the 2high, 4high, 4low is for the transfer case in nuetral. The transmission sends power through the transfer case and the transfer case sends the power to the rear wheels or front and rear wheels depending if it is in 2hi, 4hi or 4lo. The N setting for the transfer case is used when towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, like people do behind a big RV/motor home.

Leaky front seal on tronsfer case


depending on if its is from the drive shaft or the main shaft either way you will have to do a bit of work if it is the driveshaft seal I believe you can remove shaft and change seal with case in truck but dont qoute me on that if not remove transfer case and at that point it is pretty much the same amount of work for the main or the driveshaft side. get yourself either a rented or borrowed tranny jack and drain fluid before removal make sure you have all little tubes and wires off before you try and wrestle it out have a friend around for saftey good luck be careful and hope this helps

Transfer Case Assembly - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Samurai Models
Even the 2WD Samurai uses a transfer case. Rather than use a straight line driveshaft from the transmission to the differential, the Samurai leaves the transfer case in place and replaces its internal working with a simple offset gear mechanism, thus keeping 2 of the 3 driveshafts used in the 4WD vehicle.
  1. On 4WD vehicles, remove the transfer case shift lever.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Drain the oil from the transfer case.
  4. Matchmark and remove the driveshafts from the transfer case assembly. Not all of the driveshafts need to be completely removed from the vehicle, just unbolted from the case flanges. In most cases, the shaft or shafts on one side of the transfer case can be repositioned and supported out of the way.
  5. Support the transfer case using a suitable transmission jack.
  6. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transfer case.
  7. On 4WD vehicles, disconnect the 4WD switch lead wire at the coupler.
  8. Remove the three mounting bolts and/or nuts securing the transfer case to the chassis, as applicable.
  9. Carefully lower the transfer case from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position and install the transfer case. Tighten the mounting bolts to 159-248 inch lbs. (18-28 Nm) and/or the mounting nuts to 19-25 ft. lbs. (25-34 Nm).
  2. On 4WD vehicles, connect the 4WD switch lead wire at the coupler.
  3. Connect the speedometer cable to the transfer case.
  4. Properly refill the transfer case with an approved type of gear oil.
  5. Align and install the driveshafts to the transfer case.
  6. On 4WD vehicles, install the transfer case shift lever.
  7. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
Sidekick, Tracker, Sidekick Sport and X-90 Models
On these models the transfer case is bolted to the transmission and takes the place of the 2WD transmission's extension housing. Therefore, transfer case is removed or installed as part of the transmission assembly.

4x4 push button is not working about how much does


This is something you can do yourself if you have ever worked on a vehicle before. The part you need is called a front drive actuator valve. It costs about $ 50.00, GM part # 15165891.
Here is some more infor about it:

Main 4wd Components:
TCCM
- Transfer Case Control Module - Located behind the glove box. This is the electronic 'brains' behind the shifting.
Switch - The push button switch in the dash - driver input/indicator.
Encoder Motor - Located on the transfer case - This is what actually shifts the transfer case, and tells the TCCM what position it is in.
Vacuum Switch - Also located on the transfer case - This is what sends vacuum to the vacuum actuator (see below) when the transfer care is in 4HI or 4LO.
Vacuum Actuator - Located under the battery tray - This is what engages or disengages the front driveshaft.
Front Axle Switch - Located on the front axle - This is what tells the TCCM when the front axle is engaged.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with fulltime 4wd and only turns rear!


You know for a fact no power is being sent to the front axle? This transfer case only sends power to the front axle when the rear axle is slipping. Are there any unusual noises in the front axle?

If it is the transfer case, replacing it is not too big of a deal. If you are the least bit confident of your abilities, then you can do it yourself. I believe you have the NP242 transfer case, but I could be wrong. There will be a tag on the back side of the case, facing the rear axle, to the left of the drive shaft. On that tag, it will tell you which case you have. You can either have yours rebuilt, or buy a replacement either new or used.

To remove the t-case, first drain the fluid. Next remove the front driveshaft by removing the four bolts holding the u-joint in place. Then remove the rear drive shaft by doing the same as the front driveshaft, only this time it's at the rear differential. Once the drive shaft is free, support the full weight of the driveshaft, not that heavy, and pull it out of the t-case and set aside. Disconnect the shifter linkage and wiring harness. Next, remove the bolts that connect the t-case to the t-case cross member. Lift slightly and support the tranny/t-case assembly and remove the cross member. The t-case isn't very heavy, but you don't want it falling on your head, so remember to support it as you remove the bolts that connect it to the rear of the tranny. Once you bring it out from under the Jeep, and it's rebuilt or you have another unit to replace it, installation is the reverse of removal. Just remember to refill the t-case with the proper fluid.

What do i need to do to convert my c-6 4x4 tranny into a 4x2 tranny


get a 4x2 tranny, and replace the 4x4 tranny and 4x4 transfer case with it, you will also need to remove your front drive shaft, that operates your front FWD, and replace the drive shaft for the rear axel.....

Find a good Salvage yard and see about trading parts to convert to 4x2

Transfer case replacement


Make sure you set your parking break and block your wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling.Just drop the rear driveshaft, there are 4 bolt that connect it to the rearend and it should just slip outof the transfer case, unhook the linkage, unplug the speedometer sensor/cable, disconnect the front drive shaft I think that on this driveshaft there are four bolts that connect it to the front end and 4 connecting to the transfer case. I think that there are 4 or either 6 bolts that fasten the transfer case to the tranny once you take them off the case should just slip off. If you need to for clerance reasons you can take loose the transmission mount and remove the crossmember support and let the tranny hang down. Be carefull when you let the tranny hang down because tranny fluid will more than likely poor out so have a catch pan handy and watch it when you pull the transfer case off because your going to leak some fluid out there to and also this thing is heavier than it looks. Two people can probally handle it but I recommend using a floor jack of some sort.

Ring gear needs to be replaced on the flywheel


IT IS EASY TO SPLIT THE TRANSFER CASE FROM THE FORD TRANNY. YOU WILL ONLY NEED TO GET ANOTHER GASKET TO MATE THEM AGAIN. IF YOU DON'T SEPARATE THEM YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE THE LINKAGE ISSUE TO DEAL WITH THROUGH THE FLOORBOARD. MAKE A MATCH MARK ON THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE TRANNY. SOME OF THE FORDS ONLY GO BACK ONE WAY AND YOU WILL NOT WANT TO BATTLE THE WEIGHT WHILE LINING UP THE HOLES. GOOD LUCK. SOUNDS LIKE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING ANYWAY.

install everything except for the driveshaft, measure and have the driveshaft shortened or lengthened as required, true up on lathe and reweld the yokes to match components. simple job for a good machine shop that specializes in custom work.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the gearshift lever assembly from the control housing.
  3. Cover the opening in the control housing with a cloth to prevent dirt from falling into the unit.
  4. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  5. On 2WD vehicles, matchmark the driveshaft to the rear axle flange. Position a drain pan under the tailend of the transmission. Remove the driveshaft-to-rear axle flange fasteners and pull the driveshaft rearward to disconnect it from the transmission.
  6. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line a the clutch housing. Plug the lines.
  7. Disconnect the speedometer from the transfer case/extension housing.
  8. Disconnect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch harness connector.
  9. Place a wood block on a service jack and position the jack under the engine oil pan.
  10. On 4WD vehicles, remove the transfer case from the vehicle.
  11. Remove the starter motor.
  12. Position a transmission jack, under the transmission.
  13. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers.
  14. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the transmission mount and damper to the crossmember.
  15. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame side rails and remove the crossmember.
  16. Lower the engine jack slightly to angle the transmission assembly. Work the clutch housing off the locating dowels and slide the clutch housing and the transmission rearward until the input shaft clears the clutch disc.
  17. Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Check that the mating surfaces of the clutch housing, engine rear and dowel holes are free of burrs, dirt and paint.
  2. Place the transmission on the transmission jack. Position the transmission under the vehicle, then raise it into position. Align the input shaft splines with the clutch disc splines and work the transmission forward into the locating dowels.
  3. Install the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers. Tighten the retaining bolts to specifications. Remove the transmission jack.
  4. Install the starter motor. Tighten the attaching nuts.
  5. Raise the engine and install the rear crossmember, insulator and damper and attaching nuts and bolts. Tighten and torque the bolts to specification.
  6. On 4WD vehicles, install the transfer case.
  7. On 2WD vehicles, insert the driveshaft into the transmission extension housing and install the center bearing attaching nuts, washers and lockwashers. Connect the driveshaft to the rear axle drive flange.
  8. Connect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch connectors.
  9. Connect the hydraulic clutch line and bleed the system.
  10. Install the speedometer cable.
  11. Check and adjust the fluid level.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the gearshift lever assembly. Install the boot cover and bolts.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  15. Check for proper shifting and operation of the transmission.
