Question about 1996 Nissan Altima
The switch is usually connected on the negative side of the battery which is directly connected to the car's body. What happened most probably is that the wire from the switch to the lights had and insulation breakdown or abrasion and touched the car's body which eventually turns the brake nd tail lights on. Trace the wire from the switch going to the lights and check for such problem and rewire.
