Don't you believe that for a second. Mine did it not just once but twice. One ,mechanic said it was junk another said it could be fixed and he did it. Just make sure he replaces your liffters and not just straighten them, they bend back.It can be fixed. I have driven mine for 2100 miles more after the second fix. Dodge Stratus is famous for throwing timing belts. You should have it checked periodically. Make sure it was the timing belt not something else. Hope this helps hun.

Also no matter what anyone else says the valves and pistons are usually ok . Find a mechanic you trust and or get a second mechanic to get his veiw on it.

The engine is considered a high tolerance engine and most likely the engine is gone. This means that there is no room for the valves and pistons to be in the piston chamber at the same time, As the piston goes up, the valve's need to be in the close position or there's going to be contact and with the timing belt gone. The pistons will be hitting the valves. Replacement of pistons and valves, at this point you might as well rebuilt the whole engine. Sorry for the bad news friend.

Most of the time when this happens, it ruins the con-rods, piston guides, valve stems, and piston spacers, so its not worth fixing...better to get a recon engine.it will work out cheaper

the 2.0 liter is an interference engine and valve damage can occur if the belt brakes.

the 2.4 liter is not an interference engine

Broken timing belt on 2004 dodge Stratus

It can happen, I'm not sure if you car is one of these. But when a timing belt breaks you take a gamble that your car is not one of these.
That is why the timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles!
Sorry!

Bronken Timing belt. Could this have damaged other things in car

If you 2000 Dodge Stratus is equipped with either the 2.0 Liter (SOHC) 4 cylinder engine or the 2.5 Liter (SOHC) V6 then you have serious engine damage. Both these engines are interference engines. When the belt breaks the pistons will make contact with the valves thus causing damage. The belt on the 4 cylinder should have been replaced at 100,000 miles. The belt on the V6 should have been replaced at 60,00 miles. At 60 mph you for sure are going to have some damage. How much damage, you will know when they open it up.
