AC not cooling

We have a 95 geo prism. We have changed out the compressor and drier and refilled the coolant. (all o-rings and belts changed also. Still not cooling. Pressure readings with engine running are as follows: low side - 28, high side - 125. Our understanding is the high side should be 200 - 300 with engine on.

    high side can run from around 125 to 300 psi it all depends on the load on the system, there is no set pressure, normal operation on a 80 deg day it runs around 150-175, sounds like you have a problem with the blend door.

Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A.

  • Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI
  • Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI – Note that on many Chrysler products a normal reading on the low side may be 15-25 PSI
  • Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI
With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience. If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system.

Both low and high side readings are lower than normal, this indicates a cars AC system is low on refrigerant and is under-charged.

If both low and high side readings are too high, this indicates an overcharged system – too much refrigerant. This also can indicate that the condenser fan is not working, is too slow or the car is overheating and heat is transferring from the radiator to the condenser.

When the low side goes so low that it’s reading shows it is in a vacuum, the most likely cause is a bad expansion valve or blocked orifice tube. Another possibility is a restricted condenser. Blocked condensers are not as common as they used to be but if a compressor fails and comes apart inside the remnants can end up in the condenser causing it to restrict the flow of refrigerant.

When the compressor clutch is definitely engaged and the low side is high and the high side is low, the most likely cause is that the compressor is failing – it is not pumping sufficiently. Rarely an AC clutch could be slipping but usually this will be accompanied with a squeal or chirp. Also be sure not to overlook the obvious, like a loose belt!

You need to have the system vacuum evacuated, using a vacuum pump and a set of gauges, to verify that it is holding. You also must install EXACTLY the amount or refrigerant that the system calls for. Too much or too little will result in failure.

Water Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Metro
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Air cleaner
    • A/C compressor suction pipe bracket, if equipped

    • Right side lower splash shield
    • A/C compressor drive belt

    • Water pump with new gasket. Torque the bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
    • New rubber seals
    • Upper alternator adjusting bracket
    • Oil dipstick tube
    • Timing belt
    • Water pump and crankshaft pulleys. Leave the water pump pulley bolts hand-tight
    • Alternator drive belt
    • Lower alternator cover plate. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    • A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped

    • Torque the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and torque the alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

    • Air cleaner
    • Negative battery cable
  8. Refill the cooling system.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

  2. Drain the engine coolant.

    • Right side engine mount and support
    • Upper and middle timing belt covers
  4. If equipped with power steering remove the following components:
    • Front transmission mount

    • Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector from the dipstick tube

How do i take off the old water pump on 1996 geo metro 4 cyl?


Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4. Remove the suction pipe bracket for the A/C compressor, if equipped.
  5. Loosen but do not remove the 4 water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Remove the lower splash shield.
  8. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped.
  9. Remove the alternator drive belt.
  10. Remove the crankshaft and water pump pulleys.
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12. Remove the oil level dipstick and tube.
  13. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.
  14. Remove the water pump rubber seals.
  15. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts and remove the water pump from the engine.

  15. Install the suction pipe bracket for the A/C compressor, if equipped.
  16. Install the air cleaner.
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.

    CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
  19. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks and refill cooling system as necessary.

1995 Honda Civic-AC only blows cool air


the reason it's getting warmer is most likely due to a slow leak. it need the proper amount to be cool. less or more and it will be warm. it's also possible when it was charged he added too much or not enough. also if air is in the system (from not vacuuming the system or in the refrigerant tank) it will not cool as well.

the car need to be recovered, vacuumed (checked for leaks), refilled after purging the refrigerant tank of air.

After running my 96 geo prism a/c for about 10 to 15 minutes the compressor goes off and it starts blowing hot air.


CHECK TO SEE IF THE COMPRESSOR HAS 12 VOLTS PRESENT AT THE CONNECTOR, IF IT DOES AND THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT RUNNIG THEN THE AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH IS GOING OPEN AFTER IT HEATS UP AND MUST BE REPLACED.

94 geo prism-A/C stopped cooling-fan fine-green AC button not lit


I had the exact same problem with my 95 Geo. It was the AC Compressor, but before you go and get one there are other things you can check first just to be sure it is your compressor. I took it to a mechanic and he made sure that it was none of the fuses, then he hooked up the AC relay switch to the battery directly and you could hear the compressor switch on, that made the green light turn on again. It still wouldn't cool so he manually tried to turn the AC Compressor clutch and it wouldn't buge. So I went to the junkyard pick one up for about $100 and had it switched out. If I had the extra cash I would of paid double for the new one, but it was something I didn't budget for. It cools but not as great as the old one or a new one would.

Where is the water pump on 93 geo prism, small engine


You're right. it could very well be your water pump, but I would suggest replacing your thermostat before trying to tackle replacing your water pump. However, if your thermostat turns out not to be the problem, I have enclosed step-by-step instructions for removal and re-installation of your water pump. Hope this proves to be helpful. Geo Prism Water Pump Removal/Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator.
  2. Remove all drive belts.
  3. Support the engine using suitable equipment. Place a wooden block between the jack and engine. Remove the right engine mount and insulator.
  4. Remove the No. 3 (upper) and No. 2 (middle) timing belt covers.
  5. If equipped with power steering, raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front transaxle mount. Lower the vehicle, remove the cooling fan assembly.
  6. Remove the mounting bolt for the dipstick tube; remove the tube and dipstick. Immediately plug the hole in the block to prevent fluid from contaminating the oil.
  7. Remove the electrical connector for the coolant temperature sending unit.
  8. Remove the 2 nuts securing the engine coolant pipe to the cylinder block.
  9. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the coolant inlet pipe from the vehicle.
  10. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the coolant inlet hose from the water pump.
  11. If equipped with power steering, raise the engine and remove the mounting bolts for the water pump. Remove the water pump and O-ring from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install a NEW O-ring to the vehicle. Install the water pump and torque the retaining bolts EVENLY to 11 ft. lbs.
  2. Lower the engine if necessary, and connect the coolant hose to the water pump. Reconnect the engine coolant inlet pipe to the vehicle and secure to hose with clamp and secure to block with 2 nuts. Tighten the engine coolant inlet pipe nuts to 11 ft. lbs.
  3. Connect the electrical connector for the coolant temperature sending unit.
  4. Install the oil guide tube and torque the retaining bolt to 84 inch lbs. Install the oil level indicator to the guide tube.
  5. Install the radiator fan assembly, if necessary.
  6. If equipped with power steering, raise and safely support the vehicle. Install the front transaxle mount. Torque the through bolt nut to 64 ft. lbs. and 2 mount nuts to 47 ft. lbs.
  7. Lower the vehicle (if necessary) and install the No. 3 (upper) and No. 2 (middle) timing belt covers.
  8. Support the engine using suitable equipment. Install the right engine mount and insulator.
  9. Remove all engine lifting equipment.
  10. Install and adjust all drive belts.
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

How to change water pump in 1996 geo metro?


I've found the Haynes Repair Manual that you can get at Auto Zone to be the best one there is. They have step by step instructions with pictures on repairing or replacing just about anything on your auto. You can get them for around $20 - 25. Is yours a 3 or 4 cylinder? Auto Zone has a new service where you can actually look up repair instructions for your vehicle with pictures. Here's the instructions for a 3 cylinder for your year, make and model:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.

when u replaced the compressor did u drain ur system?? if not then it could cause ur system to not be cool try draining and then refilling it if u havent already
