DEFINITION: A large engine RPM increase is noted in fourth gear, Drive range, with little or no vehicle forward speed increase. First, second, and third gear operation are normal. Shifts into fourth gear are soft or do not occur. Fourth gear ratio is 0.705:1.

Grinding clutch


I'm a little confused on your description of the noise. If I understand you correctly It is making the noise when it shifts smoothly into gear but at the same time it makes a grinding noise ? It possibly can be synchronizers if the grooves on the inside of the synchronizers are worn bad enough to where the gear isn't slowing down enough causing a grind as the clutching teeth on the gear mesh with the synchrode and the shift collar.
If it is making noise in all gears except 4th you may have countershaft brgs failing. The power flow in 4th gear goes directly through the mainshaft and has a 1 to 1 ratio. All other gears the powerflow goes through the countershaft causing a load on the countershaft so if you have bearings failing in the countershaft you will hear noise in all gears but 4th.

My 1998 matrix pops out of fourth gear. Drives fine in every other gear. Replaced the clutch last year, and it works fine in every other gear.


There is a detent that holds it in gear and it is either bad due to wear or getting to much pressure against it from the gear train. Time for an overhaul.

Hello i have a 95 ford f150 6 cyl, the question is every time i put the truck in gear and i take off, my clutch makes a rattle type of noise but when i get to the over drive it dont do it, noise is worse...


Hi Ioscar,
If it's a sound sort of like a rattling sound then I'd suggest you check your mountings. That means the engine, gear box and exhaust. If what you're getting is a shudder, I'd suggest that either the clutch plate or the clutch cover (pressure plate) are defective. and should be replaced. If it's a vibration, check the universal joints and prop shaft center bearing for seizure or wear.

1997 Chevy P-32 step van (panel van, delivery van) with 4L80-E transmission: Truck drives and shifts properly in gears one through three, but slips as soon as it shifts into fourth. It will not pull at all...


the fourth clutch is burnt probably due to a bad 4th clutch piston seal... if you can get a good trans that cheap then you should just put one in it unless you are familiar with internal trans repairs...

Hard to get out of third gear and have lost fourth


your three-four synchro or you need a new clutch, hope it's the clutch, the synchro will cost alot

Stuck in third gear


Disconnect the linkage from the tranny. Manually move it on the tranny. Does it still do it. If so you have an issue with the tranny. If not its the shifter.
