The Shift Lockout Mechanism is broken. It is a small pink plastic pieceon the internal portion of your shifter Assembly towards the front. Asmall spring hooks on allowing you to shift through the gears. Thispiece was made from plastic and is very brittle and has been failing onmany SRT8 LX's.

You can buy a billet aluminum piece to replace this.

For instructions on how to replace this piece, please click here.

Hope this helps

It should also be said that you can remove the top piece of the shifter assembly without removing the entire center console so that you can manually unlock the shifter assembly and drive the car.

If it is an automatic vehicle you have, then you might want to check the cable from the shifter to the transmission. sometimes they can break, and sometimes catch on something that prevents you from shifting. Now if it is a manual vehicle, then you will need to look for another transmission.

I was driving on the reberse gear of my car on the very steep ramp but wasnt able to get it up after some time i tried the starting the car the car get starts in any gear even without pressing the clutch...

The sounds like two problems, first is starting an any gear means the neutral safty switch is bad the car should never start unless you have the clutch pedal down, next is the car will not move an any gear, this is due to a bad clutch, its burnt out and so its not connecting with the flywheel, the clutch needs replacing. hope this is helpful.

Car only starts in gear

The neutral safety switch is out of line.
It is located at the base of the gearshift lever.
It is "binding" somewhere or the red wire is corroded and touching ground.

down by your left knee on the lower part of the dash is a switch to start out in second gear in snow or icy conditions, lowers the torque to reduce spinning. just flip the switch. you probably hit it with your knee, I did!!! chibasset

1996 Geo Metro Clutch won't disengage

Hi,

In all likelihood two (2) possibilities:
  • defective clutch cable (most likely); and/or
  • defective clutch fork (least likely).
Should it be the cable, this might be of help. It is turns out to be the fork, you might need the services of a qualified professional or a dealership.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
