Question about Audi 80

Hello. i have a 1991 audi 100. brake padel has become mushy but there are no signs of brake fluid leak on the master cylinder or the lines. the brake pads are new. thanks

Just because there isn't an external leak in the brake system doesn't mean there isn't an internal leak in the master cylinder. A mushy pedal is usually an internal leak in the master cylinder or leaking wheel cylinders in the rear brake drums. Check the rear brake wheel cylinders for fluid leaks, if there are none or you do not have rear drum brakes, your best bet is the master cylinder :)

    bleed it from the master cyliner.but have to have another person to help u press down the pedal to the floor to push out the air bubbles while u loosen the bolt then u close the bolt down while the other person foot is still pressing down to the floor.then do the same with the other side of the break line.

Hi Chris, The brake system is basically very simple. If you have duel braking on your vehicle, the usual method is having two brakes operate on the front with for example the left rear and the other system will also operate two front and the right rear. This type of system will have two calipers on each of the front wheels. The tandem system works in a slightly different way, having the forward part of the cylinder pressurizing the rear brakes and the rear part of the cylinder pressurizing the front. I think under the circumstances you are describing, I would have a friend sit inside and pump the brakes repeatedly until the system becomes pressurized (maybe twenty thirty times of pumping the brake pedal) and then ask him or her to keep it pushed firmly down until you find out where its leaking. The amount of brake fluid you report having been sed would indecate a severe leakage. Check the lower parts of the rear wheels for signs of leaking wheel cylinders and then dito for the front wheels. Any signs of wetness at these areas and along the brake system (the plumbing or pipe work) will indicate where the leakage is. If you cannot identify a wheel which is leaking, carefully inspect around and blow the master cylinder and if this no sign go along the fluid lines, taking special note of where the damaged pipe was repaired. If there is a blockage in the line, air may be trapped at that point causing difficulty in pressurizing. Once the place of leakage has been identified it must be attended to before bleeding the system. When bleeding, begin with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, and work your way back to the master cylinder one wheel at a time, until you reach the closest.Keep in mind that you may find it required to pump the pedal many many times before opening the bleed nipple.Regards John

Soft (mushy) braking on my 2005 Dodge Dakota V6


soft and mushy brakes is a sign that there could be air in the brake system or your master cylinder has a bad O-ring in it.
first thing to check is to see if there is fluid in your brake fluid reservoir,, if the fluid level is low - then re-fill the reservoir and bleed the brake lines ( all the brake lines ). if the reservoir is full - then I would assume that the master cylinder is bad and needs to be replaced,, but there is also a chance that you have a leak somewhere in a line or at the distribution valve -- make sure you look for the leak.

Brakes have a mushy to floor response


usually an indicator of either a loss of pressure due to low fluid and/or air in the system (brake fluid leak) or extremely worn rear brakes (if drum brakes in rear). possible causes include master cylinder (internal fluid pressure leak), external fluid leaks (calipers, lines, wheel cylinders), rear drum brakes extremely worn down or severely out of adjustment. normally worn disc brakes may reduce pedal height SOME, but seldom "to floor". but the "mushy" quote combined with the "floor" quote suggests a hydrolic fluid pressure problem.

Brakes squishy no leak


Mushy / squishy brakes are usually caused by the brake master cylinder seals failing. You can buy a rebuild kit or a re-built replacement master cylinder. I would recommend the rebuilt master cylinder as all the detail work has already been accomplished and it is not a huge expense. The key is to make sure that your use a bleeder kit to "Pre-bleed" the master kit before installation. Your making sure that the master cylinder is free of air before installation. If you instal it with air in the system it wil take you the better part of a quart of brake fluid to bleed the whole brake system via the wheel cylinders. What will happen is after you install the master cylinder the brakes would still be mushy and until you got the residual air out of all of the lines it would appear and act just like it did before you changed the master cylinder.

Power steering is weak and pump is whining, also the brakes are a little mushy. Is there a booster pump that affects both of these? Fluids seem fine.


If your power steering is whining you may just be low on power sterring fluid. I would check that first. If that is good your power steering pump may be on its way out.

There is a power brake booster in your system, but that should not affect if your brakes feel "mushy". I would look at the master cylinder, you probably need a new master cylinder they have a tendency to leak fluid past the seals as they age giving your pedal a mushy feeling. I woould also check your brake lines on each wheel to see if one might be leaking, this will give you a mushy feel as well. I doubt that is the case if you aren't loosing fluid however.

Break peddle to the floor no resistence behind it, and not stopping well, no noise.


First of all, don't drive with the brakes this way...
Sounds like you've lost the hydraulic pressure in the brake system.
Check the following:
1. Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir to make sure it's full of brake fluid. If not, top it off with the recommend brake fluid.
2. Try the brake pedal again, with the car running in PARK, press a few times and see if the pedal "firms up".
3. If it does, press and hold the brake pedal with the motor still running. Look to see if the pedal slowly sinks to the floor or if it's a bit "mushy" or feels ok.

If the pedal sinks to the floor, you've got a major leak in the brake system. This could be from one of the wheel cylinders, from the disk brake caliper piston, a damage brake hose, brake line, a faulty master cylinder, power brake booster.
The best way to check is a visual inspection. Look around each wheel- look for fluid leaks, for signs of fluid where you park, on the axles, under the hood near the brake fluid reservoir, etc.
If after the fluid is topped off, you get a mushy pedal, I would suggest getting the brakes "bled". Bleeding the brakes simply means getting all the air out of the brake lines. (Air compresses where brake fluid won't- if the pedal is mushy it's got air.)
If you've not done brake work before, I highly recommend taking it to a local mechanic to help you out. You really want to KNOW that your brakes are going to be there when you need them. So if in doubt have a mechanic check it out.

Brakes mush to the floor at times. Some times


May be air in the brake lines.
Bleed the brakes. Most brake shops do a lousy job. If you have it done make sure they test drive the car before you pay. If the brakes are still mushy, take it back and make them do it right or get your money back (all of it).
Very difficult to do by yourself, you will need an assistant if you haven't done it before.
Yes, there are one-man bleeders, not for first-timers.

Brake pedal goes too far down. Brakes still stop car fine. Too much pedal travel. 2005 model year.


You have to check your master cylinder, pump your brake several times and hold it, see if is going down to the bottom, if does, the master cylinder is wrong, check the brake pressure hose, maybe you have some air in your brake lines, be sure you have enough brake fluid
