My 99 Malibu starts idling rough and dies at anything lower than 500 rpm. I have to brake while pressing the gas pedal in order to keep the car from dying. It has died on me while going downhill at 40 mph, when the rpm's drop; it has died on the freeway, while taking a 25 mph corner on an offramp; it has died while breaking for a red light, etc. The car will start again, but shudders when you give it gas. The car also struggles to start in the morning. You often have to give it gas and keep the rpm's up.
Thanks.
Jesse

- The engine only shakes when I start it up after dying and quickly step on the gas, as I had to do today when it died on me several times in the middle of the road. It does not feel as though it is misfiring, as it starts up without shaking under normal conditions...I merely have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine running. It will shudder right before the engine dies, however.
The check engine light is not on, though the bulb could very well be burnt out. I hear a "ding, ding, ding" every time I start the vehicle up after it has died, but the only light on my dash is the coolant light, which has been stuck on (another issue all together...I just need to have the code reset).
This is a 6 cyclinder.
Thanks.

- Is this something that would go out over a long period of time or all at once? This problem has been getting progressively worse for about 6 months now, and has finally resulted in the vehicle dying in response to the problem.

- No, the exhaust doesn't smell abnormal or overly-strong in my guesstimation.
ok does it shake badly, the engine that is? you may have alot going on. is the check engine light on steady or flashing? and 4 cylinder or 6 please

- i agree with the bad idle air control solenoid. can also be a vacume leak or a bad mass airflow sensor. tell me this when it restarts hard does the exhaust stink? like rotten eggs? if so im gona say the mass air flow sensor. you can test with a scanner or unplug it temporally, it will run fine but be hesitant when first on the throttle

- ok then idle air control it is about 65 bucks and 2 screws to change. good luck with it! also when these fail the check engine light wont illuminate

It is likely that the idle air control valve or the throttle position sensor is bad on the vehicle this could cause the hard starts and the idle situation at stops.
it happened to me today on the freakn freeway in bad traffic and construction. im glad my girl didnt go to work today or i would have been on the news. ok here is the solution to the problem: first clean out butterfly valve and intake manifold. next take a look at your spark plugs youre gona have to replace them cause the main culprit is vacuum lines!!! i had 2 bad lines cause it was factory lines. they sucked up too much air into two of my combustion chambers and fouled out my plugs. so check the vacuum lines. cost me 200 bucks to pay a mechanic. but now i know so i can fix it myself. i have a 1999 chevy malibu 4 cylinder hope this helps

my '99 malibu is having a tranny problem... it slips from take-off, and when on the hghway, it feels like a slight bucking while it's tryng to shift. also, I just put a brand new starter in, but it still seems slow to start (not ''catching'' right away). I love the car, but it seems to be one problem after another lately. It only has 84k miles.
