Nothing, it's the starter. Making a grinding sound means moving part, the relay only goes "click".

Can a bad starter relay burn out a starter


st people are familiar with fuses - they allow your car's electronics to work while protecting them from over-voltage situations. Relays are similar, but much larger and more powerful. There's a relay for most of the major components on your car, including the fuel pump, the air conditioner compressor and the starter.
Your starter relay is engaged every time you turn the ignition to run. Voltage is sent through the relay and if it has failed, it stops there. With a dead relay, the starter won't work and your engine won't crank. The relay is subjected to very high voltage when you turn the ignition, and this will eventually cause the contact circuit to burn out. It's also possible for the relay's energizing circuit to fail.
n terms of lifespan, your starter relay should last a very long time. Many drivers never have to replace theirs, but this isn't true across the board. Relays can and do fail at any point, including when the car is new. My 93 chevy surburban starter is grinding & trying to stay engaged after it finally starts. What should i do


Sounds as if there may be a problem with the starter drive inside the starter causing it to not retract properly. You will have to remove the starter and inspect the drive for wear/loosness and proper starter operation. You may also have a problem with a starter relay sticking causing power to be supplied to the starter all the time causing this issue.

Hi Maury, Seems you have a number of different problems at the same time. The grinding sound when pushing the clutch pedal would seem to be the clutch thrust release bearing, which is located inside the bell housing and requires the removal of the gearbox to replace. The warning lights should come on each time the ignition is switched on and then they should extinguish after a few seconds. The illumination of these lights is a fail safe system to show that all warning systems are active. The radio will go off during the period when the starter is engaged as a relay shunts all power to the starter during that procedure. The starter motor uses more power from the battery than any other system. The manufactures have taken this into consideration when designing the circuitry and decided as many others have, to adopt the operation. If when starting from cold this does not happen and the radio plays, it is indicating either excessive drawing of power by the starter and may also be the cause of the grinding noise you experience? Starter and selanoid are new yet starter still grinds sometimes


it can be a few things. the starter may not be lined up properly with the flywheel or the flywheel may be chipped from the grinding or the starter may just be loose.

Starter motor grinding


This sounds like you will need to remove the starter to be sure...this grinding is usually caused by the spring loaded armature not releasing to retract into the starter after starting...this grinding means the starter is not disengaging from the flywheel...sometimes installing shims to shorten the engagement length works, but on your late model Toyota, this would be unusual...probably will need to replace the starter. Continued driving could cause serious damage to the flywheel, a costly repair...don't wait to repair or replace...the engine and transmission need to be seperated to replace a damaged flywheel. Starter will not engage with fly weel all the time grinds sometimes starter is new clutch swich is working


when replacing a starter motor, some have shims or spacers to make correct distance when installed. if these wre left out on instalation this will cause the problem. another problem can be incorrect number of teeth on starter motor which will cause grinding sound and prevent correct meshing of teeth on flywheel
it is also common to get a bad new starter
check solenoid

Sounds like either an ignition problem. (Switch, not the lock cylinder) or a short somewhere between the switch and the starter relay.
