I HAVE A 1999 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE, 112,000 MILES. JUST FOUND OUT BALL BEARINGS NEED REPLACING. THE MECHANIC SAID WOULD COST $1,600- $1,700 TO FIX AND THAT THE RODS OR CRANK MAY NEED REPLACING BUT HE WILL NOT KNOW UNTIL HE GETS "IN THERE" IS THIS TRUE? CAN A JEEP DEALER TELL WITH JUST CHANGING THE BALL BEARINGS AND /OR SHOULD I EVEN BOTHER GETTING THIS FIXED? (PLEASE DON'T SAY TOO BAD I DID NOT GO FOR CASH FOR CLUNKERS!!) LTW

First, what seems to be the problem? Second, engines don't use "ball bearings" (not on the rods or mains anyway). Third, yes catastrophic engine failures can be detected without taking anything apart. Fourth, no, he cannot say for certain that the rods or crank might be bad without taking it apart. Go back to first and tell us what is really going on.

The front bearings on a Jeep should have lasted longer but, there you go. When he disassembles the front end to replace them he should check the steering linkage and suspension since they are weaker than the bearings and even more prone to give out.
If you don't do the repair the wheels might fall off, kind of a downer, that.

2006 jeep cherokee suspension problems and cost to fix sounde like and feels like too much play in front and small bumps are too harsh

At around 50,000 miles I had a similar issue and had to replace the right bearing hub assembly. I was having a vibrating issue also, so this may not be the same issue.

2006 jeep grand cherokee PRND all light up then my engine light comes on but goes off after a few runs

I had the same problem with my Jeep and I took it to the dealer. the shifter bezel was bad (this is a electronic, fly-by-wire type of shifting mechanism). The dealer replaced the shifting bezel and it fixed the problem. My Jeep was out of warranty by about 2,000 miles and they would not fix it for free. They told me this is a common problem. Cost was around $475.00.

Jeep grand cherokee transmission clunk

well then it sounds to me as if you need a transmission replacement...a flush or service at this point won't do you any good, as the transmission is using the contamination in the fluid to build pressure. so if you flush it all away, then the new fluid is way too thin to build any pressure...just replace your transmission....

Front differential bearings need replacing

No they will need replaced. But it should in no way cost that much. You should be able to get both replaced for about 500-600

Front end and rear end differential

The 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee was prone to bad diff bearings because they changed the plant where they were made. The new plant used inferior materials. The only way to fix it is to replace and set the diff clearences.
